Stereo Mood. Drunk, horny or high? We have a play list for that.
Of the two lists I immediately clicked on (Drunk and States of Hallucinations) both were slam drunks. I mean dunks. Stereo Mood is my new favorite time-killer. Dig it.
The impossibly catchy WARD! comes Visqueen’s third studio record, Message to Garcia. Without fear of going out on a limb, it’s probably the Seattle trio’s best effort. WARD! is one of those songs you find yourself singing out loud. And that’s because it’s simply impossible not to want to pretend you sound exactly like Visqueen’s powerhouse vocalist, Rachel Flotard. Which of course, you don’t.
I know you don’t really want to believe that summer is pretty much done. But like you, I’m still in denial of that sad fact so I spent the day at the beach, marveling at the surf kicked up by Hurricane Danny, wishing that the lyrics to from Buffalo Tom’ssong Summer weren’t so timely.
In two days, it’s going to be September. Summer’s gone, it’s written in the sand.
*Programming note: Posts will be slow tomorrow as I’ll be traveling back to Seattle so read the archives! There’s some good shit in there.*
On the B-side of Sunrise, the new 7″ from Soulsavers (Mark Lanegan and Rich Machin) is a haunting cover of the Bonnie Prince Billy(aka, Will Oldham) song, “You Will Miss Me When I Burn”. You can listen to it at the bands Myspace. Oldham turns the tables for side-A of the single by lending his vocals toSunrise, a song written by Lanegan.
Broken, the third record from Soulsavers(the second one with Mark Lanegan on vocals), will be out on August 18th. Mike Patton(Faith No More, Mr. Bungle) and Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers also appear on the tracks Unbalanced Pieces(Patton) and Death Bells(Haynes). Soulsavers will play three gigs in London and Glasgow starting on August 24th.
Soulsavers return to Seattle to perform at Bumbershoot on September 7th. I’m not missing that, how about you?
Austin’s The Hex Dispensers just put out their second LP, Winchester Mystery House on on of my favorite labels, Douchemaster, home to the equally excellent Davilla 666. Members of the band have collectively been in at least 10 other bands, including another one of my favorite things, Seattle’sTractor Sex Fatality. Hex sounds like a cranked up Jim Carrolldriving by your house in a hearse doing 80 in a school zone with Johnny Ramone riding shotgun. The bands 2009 record, Winchester, is yet another strong contender for my favorites records of 2009. Hex has delivered some absolute throw-back, full-throttle punk rock ear candy for all. At least those of us with classy ears.
The Hex Dispensers will be at The Scoot Inn in Austin on Saturday, August 1st. More on The Hex Dispensers can be found @ Germany’s Alien Snatch Records.
The Soviettes, Land of the Clear Blue Radio. From the Soviettes LP, 2003. For Sarah.
Although The Soviettes are sadly no more, you can catch two-thirds of the band (Annie Holoien and Danny Henry) and their band,The Awesome Snakes on Thursday, July 30th with Seattle’s own Coconut Coolouts(who just released excellent new music I’ll jaw about later on the blog) at the 7th Street Entry in the Soviettes/Snakes home base, Minneapolis.
Future of the Left, Chin Music. From 2009’s Travels with Myself and Another.
Future of the Left is comprised of two former members of one of my favorite groups, Cardiff’s, McLusky. Thankfully one of them is former McLusky front-man Andrew Falkous, who’s distinctive sneering, expletive laced vocal style, predominates the bands second record.
Future of the Left will play the Capitol Hill Block party on Saturday, July 25th along with Sonic Youth (!), The Maldives, The Thermals and The Gossip. It’s going to be a tough call for yours truly as both Future and The Gossip take the stage at opposite ends of the Block Party at 9:00 pm on Saturday.
Tonight, Future of the Left plays a room that has seen everyone from Morphine to Buffalo Tom over the last 20 years, T.T. The Bears.
Cheap Trick, I Can’t Take It. Live from 1984. For LP.
I love it when Robin Zander makes all the pretty high notes in this live version. It’s almost as good as the version that runs through my head when I’m running. Or drunk. Either way 24 years later, it still sounds great.
The band released their most recent record, The Latest, last month sans label support. Cheap Trick plays the Riverbend Music Center in Cincinati on July 15th. More Cheap Trick tour dates here.
Deep Soul by The Revelations featuring Tre’ Williams, 2008.
This 2008 record from The Revelations, featuring vocalist Tre’ Williams slipped by me. And while I don’t have a reasonable explanation for this gross oversight, I’m trying to make up for it now by posting the brilliant track from Deep Soul,He’s a Hustler. If you dig Hustler, then click here to download four more tracks from Deep Soul via the bands Myspace, for free.
The Dynamics, Seven Nation Army, originally released on 7′ in 2006. For JB.
The Dynamics are from Lyon, France. You can find this White Stripes cover, as well as dubbed out versions of Miss You by The Rolling Stones and Whole Lotta Love on The Dynamics2008 release, Version Excursions.
GLISS, Sleep. From 2009’s Devotion Implosion. Click the image to listen to Sleep.
You can find Sleep on GLISS’s second record, Devotion Implosion. The LA band is currently in the midst of a three month, US tour. If you missed the Zeppelin-esque fuzz that is GLISS last week at El Corazon, don’t worry. The band will be back in Seattle on June 10th at Vera for an all ages show.
Originally signed to Vision Records, part of Fat Albert Productions(Harold Albert pioneered the “Fat Albert” drum and the duo recorded The Stones and Clapton), Princess MC put out this hotter than hawt 12″, Pump Up The Funk in 1989. You can find PrincessMC’sPump onFly Girls! – B Boys Beware: Revenge of the Super Female Rappers, a double disc/LP, celebrates the history of the female MC. A girl who was never really gone, unless it came to her powers of mike control.
Today I ran a 5K in Seattle with lots of other fuckers. In the street. In the snow (the size of cotton balls), ice (very fucking cold) and (also very cold and falling sideways) rain. At any rate, when I was approaching the finish line it was a song from The Makers(out of Spokane, Washington, 509 represent!) that helped me plow through. Anyway, I do have one rant observation that is not weather related but is related to The Makers awesome song, Too Many Fuckers on the Street. If you are going to run in an organized event, is it too much to ask that you not text or talk on your cell phone while you pretend to run? Your cell phone fuckery makes it difficult for me to pass your lazy ass. All because you are busy texting one of your jackass friends: “Sup OMG BION its snowing, LOL WRUD?”. In the future, please get out of my god-damned way. Thanks.
Blur’sCrazy Beats can be found on the bands final studio record, 2003’sThink Tank. Blur will play two shows, their first live gigs in almost 10 years, in London’s Hyde Park on July 2nd and July 3rd, 2009.
Buffalo Tom coined one of my favorite phrases with the title of their 1992 record (one of my top 10 records of all time), Let Me Come Over. Every few years, this record, especially the deep-cutMountains, define a new space in my sad liquor addled life time for me. Just like it did in 1992. If you don’t own it, I won’t chastise this time as I usually do. Instead, I will gently encourage you to pick up this record as soon as you can. You’re music collection (and your favorite, musically inclined Cherry) thank you.
The band is currently recording songs for a new record and will slowly release some vintage recordings online via The Buffalo Tom website. Tune in, yo…
