Well, Lemmy might not be able have his regular serving of Jack and cake like he did back in the day, but he can still stand on top of a cake and make it the most metal thing you’ve ever put in your mouth. Unless you’ve actually slept with Lemmy. And if that’s the case, carry the fuck on.
Thanks to UK company, Janie’s Peeps., Lemmy and a few other headbangers have become completely metal cake toppers, made out of polymer clay and run about $35 a peep. A few of my favorites follow, including another pissed off looking Lemmy, holding his signature Rickenbacker bass.
Happy Friday the 13th to all you ! In honor of this very metal superstitious Friday, I’ve collaborated with the horror hounds over at Destroy the Brain in the first in a series of monthly columns titled, “The Thirteen“. This month, DTB’s overlord, Andy Triefenbach, asked the DTB blogging crew to hand-pick songs that were used unorthodox ways, in a horror film. I’m really excited to be a part of this rolling feature, as well as the inaugural post! And with that may I present: The Thirteen Songs Used In Films That Take On A Haunting Feeling. Make sure you keep the lights on, and the radio off while reading this one kids.
Also, make sure you’re all up to date with the Movies About Girls gang. Episode #174 is up an ready for your viewing and listening pleasure, as well as a special edition of the cult rock podcast, Advanced Demonology: Maximum Flute Jams.
Now, here’s all the metal stuff that happened this week…

I’ve never been a big fan of tattooing your hands, but if you’re gonna do it, I say go big or go the fuck home. Like this completely metal dude who had the images of the following rock stars tattooed above his knuckles by the equally metal RH McClurg, artist and owner of SikInk Studios in Las Vegas. From left to right: James Brown, Kurt Cobain, Jerry Garcia, Freddie Mercury, Ronnie James Dio, Leonard Peltier, Jimi Hendrix, & Joe Strummer. Personally, I would have gone with Lemmy over Jerry Garcia, but your fingers are your business. Well done tattooed dude, well done.
Today, September 5th, would have been Freddie Mercury’s 66th birthday. It is also the 20th anniversary of “Freddie For A Day“, an annual even started back in 1992 that encourages fans of Freddie to celebrate his life by doing something Freddie-esque, like dress like Freddie, create a piece of art in Mercury’s image, all by raising money for the Mercury Phoenix Trust and, Mercury’s AIDS charity.
Freddie, The Angry Bird.
“Freddie The Angry Bird“, a cartoon short featuring Mercury as a character from the popular video game Angry Birds, went viral. I can’t wait to see what else Freddie Fan’s come up with today via the official Freddie For A Day.
Johnny Cash, Live At Folsom Prison pantone swatch album cover by David Marsh.
Artist David Marsh used over 1,369 solid color swatches to recreate each of these very metal classic album covers from Johnny Cash, to Bowie and beyond. Some of my favorites follow, but you can see them all at Marsh’s website.
David Bowie, Aladdin Sane pantone swatch album cover by David Marsh.
