Daily Earwig: Black Mountain – Let Spirits Ride… 0

Posted on September 03, 2010 by DJC

Black Mountain, Let Spirits Ride. From the upcoming record, Wilderness Heart , due out on September 14th.

According to Black Mountain vocalist, Stephen McBean, Wilderness Heart, the bands third full length, is their most “metal” yet. I’ve listened to five tracks off the record and, in addition to a couple of sweet folk-y jams, three of the five are so metal, they will melt your face off.

Black Mountain will play the Showbox in Seattle on November 29th. More on the Vancouver, BC band, including a full list of tour dates, here.

They Don’t Call It The “BIG” Easy For Nothing: The Biggest Penises In The Country Live In New Orleans… 1

Posted on August 26, 2010 by DJC

Condomania tells you where the biggest penises are in the country. In other news, I’m moving to New Orleans! I guess they really don’t call it the “Big Easy” for nothing.

Condomania has been collecting data on penis size since 2004 when they launched, They Fit Condoms, a line of custom fitted jimmy-hats. They Fit Condoms come in 76 different sizes, ranging from 3 to 10 (!) inches in length and, from super slim to “extra-roomy” in width.  The strictly-dickly-data collection, culled by the feedback provided by 27,000 penises from around the world, is the largest (ahem) evaluation on Mr. Johnson since The Kinsey Penis Report in the early 90’s. Below are more fun penis facts from Condomania. In other news, I can’t wait to go back to New Hampshire!

  • Top Ranking State by Average Penis Size: New Hampshire
  • Lowest Ranking State by Average Penis Size: Wyoming
  • Top Ranking U.S. City by Average Penis Size: New Orleans
  • Second Highest Ranking City (just behind N.O.): Washington, D.C.
  • Lowest Ranking City by Average Penis Size: Dallas/Ft. Worth
  • Blue States vs Red States: Blue States’ Average Penis Size is Bigger!
  • Penises Come in a Wide Range of Sizes: The Smallest Penises are Less Than 3″ in Length and the Largest Penises are Longer Than 10″ in Length
  • Penis Sizes Chart Almost a Perfect Bell Curve: 25% of the Male Population is Under 5″ in Length, 50% are Between 5″ and 6″ in Length and 25% are Longer than 6″ in Length

GTFO: Thunderbitch @ The Tether Gallery Through August 28th… 0

Posted on August 26, 2010 by DJC

Thunderbitch! By Ellen Forney.

The Thunderbitch exhibit that has been running at the Tether Design Gallery in Seattle all month is, about to end. Which means if you haven’t seen it, you only have two more days to make things right by GTFO to see it. The exhibit features graphic works and rock posters done by women artist based in the Pacific Northwest, dating back to the 1960’s. The way I look at it is like this; if you like girls who like to rock and love art, this one is a slam-dunk.

Daily Earwig: Nirvana vs. The Jackson Five… 1

Nirvana and The Jackson Five mash-up (Smells Like Teen Spirit and Rockin’ Robin). Thanks to RDK for the link.

This Nirvana/Jackson Five mash-up by UK DJ and producer Go Home Productions (aka, Mark Viddler who is also responsible for the Blondie/Doors mash-up previously featured on Cherrybombed.com), is like musical crack for the ears. You literally can’t stop hitting the replay button. Best mash-up ever? The answer is quite possibly, yes.

Can’t Get Enough Of That Long Haired Music With Electric Mike: Overlooked Classicks – The Makers… 0

Posted on July 12, 2010 by DJC

The Makers, Rock Star Gods!

Electric Mike is back with another installment of “Can’t Get Enough Of That Long Haired Music”. This time, Mike will school us all on the glam garage heroes, The Makers. Take it away Electric Mike!

Can’t Get Enough of That Long Haired Music #2
Overlooked Classicks
MAKERS – “Rock Star God” LP
Alright, I am just gonna come right out and say it:  the GLAM Makers are twice the band the GARAGE Makers are.  Sure, they probably should have changed their name when they changed their style but album for album I will take the later era of the band any day.  They were a good, solid, garage punk band, even top notch on the self titled LP on Estrus.  Like the Chesterfield Kings they started out playing traditional garage rock and evolved into a big ol’ glam monster around the 5th album.  Nearly everyone I know jumped off the train when Psychopathia Sexualis was released and I think that might be their best record.  If it ain’t then Rock Star God sure as hell is!!  This fantastic Sub Pop debut concept album rang in the new century with style, swagger, and hooks galore.  It is a majestic, grandiose, ambitious record that nails everything it is going for with room to spare.  In my opinion, it is on par with its obvious template, Ziggy Stardust.  The pacing is nearly identical, with “Too Many Fuckers on The Street” landing where “Suffragette City” does and the peaks and valleys in between are quite similar.  Here’s the thing though; Rock Star God is every bit as good as Ziggy Stardust in my opinion.  This LP is simply C-L-A-S-S-I-C from start to finish and it sounds better 10 years later than it did when it came out.  Rock Star God deserves a second listen from anyone who wrote it off originally and if you are a fan of glam rock in any respect, this will be one of your favorite records.  –Mike Frame

New on Cherrybombed.com: Time For Fuzz With Fizzy Lipton…! 0

Fizzy Lipton in action. Photo by Lori Penney.

Generally, Monday tends to yank the joy right out of  yours truly. But, today’s not Monday! Yipee! Also, Monday marked the arrival of yet another new feature here on Cherrybombed.com, Time For Fuzz With Fizzy Lipton.  From time to time, Fizzy will check in via your favorite random blog with classic nuggets of misunderstood wisdom, straight from his heart. One of Seattle’s finest fist-fighting mind stimulator’s, Fizzy’s musical career that spans nearly 20 sonic years. Fizzy’s motto of Fun, Fuzz and Fuck-it-if-you-can’t-take-a-joke, directly align with Cherrybombed.com’s core philosophy. Let there be no doubt that this is going to be one beautiful, rock ‘n’ roll relationship.

As with Electric Mike’s arrival, I could not be more stoked that Mr. Lipton is now officially a part of Team Cherrybomb!

Check out the next post for Fizzy’s up-close-and-personal take on the film, Malfunkshun: The Andy Wood Story.

Time For Fuzz With Fizzy Lipton – Soul Survivors: Malfunkshun – The Andrew Wood Story @ The Hard Rock Café… 1

Soul Survivors

Sneak Preview of ‘Malfunkshun: The Andy Wood Story – a film by Scot Barbour
Kevin Wood with Malfunkshun and All Hail the Crown
The Hard Rock Café, Seattle 6.25.10

When I first moved to Seattle I got a job at the Raison D’être Café as a replacement for Jeff Ament. The view out of the kitchen window was the side of the Vogue where someone had painted Mother Love Bone in giant letters. One day Jeff stopped in to tell some people about his new band, and that’s when a co-worker told me he and another guy had worked there, played together in Mother Love Bone, and now the other guy was dead. Before I went to see Malfunkshun: The Andy Wood Story, that was all I knew about his life and music. By the end of the film though I didn’t just know about Andy, I felt like I knew Andy.

On the surface, this is your typical ‘Behind the Music’ tale: talent-fame-drugs-death. But this isn’t the story of Andy Wood the musician; this is the story of Andy Wood the person. Director Scot Barbour managed to steer clear of clichés and instead create a beautifully made film with reverence for its subject. His skillful editing combines visually dazzling graphics and archival footage with heartfelt testimony from band mates, friends, and family (most notably Kevin, and Toni Wood) to create an in-depth, honest portrait of a free spirit tortured by personal demons. Lyrics like “I know my name is pain” make it clear that Andy used music to try and exorcise those demons. He also used drugs. This film explores the dysfunctional family environment that produced both the outgoing entertainer persona Landrew and the private addict struggling desperately to sort out feelings of pain and love. The tragedy of Andy’s story is not that he almost made it to superstardom; it’s that he almost made it to being a survivor.

The last marquee on the Lusty Lady reads: It’s okay Seattle. You still have the Internet.

Thanks to AFJ for the photo. Your stroll to work won’t be as sexy as it used to be. It will however continue to be littered in crack rocks and pee.

GTFO: Malfunkshun – The Andrew Wood Story @ The Hard Rock, June 25th… 0

Kevin Wood and Shawn Smith @ The Showbox, April 14h, 2010. Photo courtesy of Wind Hughes.

Ever since the Mother Love Bone show in April, I’ve had grunge on the brain. One of my favorite memories from that momentous show was when Kevin Wood walked out on stage, beaming and shredding his heart out.  If you missed that show, Wood will be back at new Hard Rock Café in Seattle on June 25th performing with a revamped Malfunkshun and All Hail The Crown, fronted by Shawn Smith.

Before the live show, there will be a screening of the Andy Wood documentary, Malfunkshun: The Andy Wood Story. The movie, over ten years in the making by director Scot Barbour, has just been picked up by Universal Films. The screening also includes a Q&A session with Barbour, the films creator and music producer Jack Endino (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Murder City Devils), Kevin Wood and Toni Wood, Andy and Kevin Wood’s mother.

New on Cherrybombed.com! Listen To This With Electric Mike… 0

Electric Mike knows how to rock. Photo by August Heinrich.

Exciting news to all you Cherrybombed.com faithful! Today I’m launching the first entry from our new, very metal contributor, Mike Frame. Or as he will be known here at Cherrybombed.com, Electric Mike.

When he’s not wielding his guitar with the punk trio, The Electric Kisses, Frame likes to write about rock. Currently, Frame writes for the excellent zine Razorcake. Over the last decade, you may have also read the words of Mike in Hit List Magazine, Jeff Dahl’s Sonic Iguana and Big Takeover Magazine. I can’t tell you how excited I am to have Mike on board!

Today Electric Mike uses many excellent words to describe the virtues of long haired Australian band Airbourne and their new record, No Guts, No Glory. Take it away Electric Mike!

Can’t Get Enough of that Long Hair Music
AIRBOURNE – No Guts, No Glory CD (Roadrunner)
As a long term believer in the “Fuck originality, let’s rock!” point of view, I absolutely LOVE Australian hard rockers AIRBOURNE.  This band kicks so much fucking ass, I cannot believe that they got a major record deal.  I have played their debut record, “Runnin’ Wild”, to death the last coupla years and was anxiously awaiting this new long player.  I am happy to say that the second record is just as good as the first and once again I have a soundtrack for summer.  Raging, high energy aussie hard rock is what I wanna hear more often than not and this band delivers in spades.  They sound like 80’s AC/DC with Angry Anderson from ROSE TATTOO on vocals, how is this not going to be my new favorite band??  They are not quite as good as Acka Dacka or the Tats, but they are better than other similar great bands like Kix, Dirty Looks and Rhino Bucket -pretty good territory to be in for rockin’.  This is music made for driving around in the sun and I will be doing plenty of that this summer.  –

Drunks ‘N’ Punks – The Photographs Of Kelly O… 0

Jake the Snake Roberts and Ronald McFondle of SPS. Drunk of the Week photo from July 14th, 2009 by Kelly O.

Seattle photographer and writer for The Stranger, Kelly O, will open an exhibit of photographs called Drunks ‘n’ Punks at Easy Street Records in West Seattle on June 10th. In addition to taking some great live shots of drunk musicians when they were drunk, the real stars of O’s show will undoubtedly be the Happy Hour 4-EVA! subjects that have appeared (as far as they know) in her “Drunk of the Week” feature that has run in The Stranger for the last seven years.
