GTFO: The Dutchman Benefit, March 12th… 0

Posted on March 09, 2009 by DJC

guitarsinthegutterthedutchman

Guitars salvaged from The Dutchman fire. I don’t know about you, but this photo made me cry.

On January 7th, 2009, The Dutchman, long time Seattle rehearsal/recording space burned to the ground. Two months later, the first benefit show for The Dutchman will take place at The Funhouse on March 12th. Taking the stage will be The Zack Static Sect, one of the musical residents of the 103 year old Dutchman reportedly lost everything in the fire. The rest of the night includes, The Pleasure Elite, LD & Her Pretty, Pretties and Witchburn (!). Another benefit for Gary Mula (owner and resident of The Dutchman) is in the works for later on this year at Neumo’s. Mula’s cat, Jules, died in the fire.

If you can make a donation to The Dutchman Fund, click here. If you’re a local artist, musician or in a position to donate an item or your time to an upcoming silent auction or event for The Dutchman, click here.

Thanks to LP for the link.

Posted on February 25, 2009 by DJC

Davila 666, El Lobo, 2008.

The band that put out my favorite record of 2008, Davila 666, say they plan to put out a 7″ single later this summer on Chicago’s HoZac Records. I can’t get enough of this band so, I’m completely stoked.

For all you East Coast Strutters out there, Davila will depart from their native Puerto Rico to play a few live gigs in March. Here are the dates:

March 4th: Phily @ Johnny Brenda’s with The Homosexuals (!)

March 5th: Boston @ Church

March 6th: Brooklyn @ Southpaw

March 7th: New Haven @ Cafe 9

March 8th: Jersey @ Maxwells

March 9th: Brooklyn @ Don Pedros

Vinyl Killers Exhibit at The Good Foot Gallery in Portland… 0

Posted on November 06, 2008 by DJC

Tom Waits, forever in vinyl. Daniel Edlen, acrylic on vinyl.

The Good Foot Gallery in Portland, Oregon opened a massive exhibit of painted vinyl records on October 30thVinyl Killers runs through November 30th. The exhibit features an extensive array of international vinyl artists. Among them is a Cherrybomb favorite, Daniel Edlen. Edlen has eight amazing pieces in the exhibit, including the one of Tom Waits, above.

For more on Edlen and photos of his most recent work, check out his blog. For more on vinyl art, get to The Good Foot Gallery.

hate-issue-23-peter-bagge.jpg
Hate issue #23 – Peter Bagge – Fantagraphics

Comic Forum – Frye Art Museum – Fry Auditorium
Peter Bagge was the managing editor for R. Crumb’s classic comic, Weirdo before launching his own comic, Neat Stuff. And as excellent as all that stuff is, Bagge is also the creator of Hate comics (above) which, unless you lived in a cave on the mountains during the 90’s you are very much aware of. Ellen Forney and Jim Woodring are also part of the forum. Woodring is married to Dianna Young-Blanchard of the awesome DT’s and occasionally does posters for the band. Those things are definitely worth collecting.

neil-doherty-space-needle-eclipse.jpg
Neil Doherty – Space Needle Eclipse

In other eye candy news, local photographer and artist, Neil Doherty, is showing some of his gorgeous B&W’s at Marcus’s Martini Heaven in Pioneer Square. The photos were taken between 2003 and 2008 in Belgrade, Amsterdam, Serbia, Bosnia, the US and Canada. Doherty really gets around. But I think Doherty sums what he does best with this statement from his show bio:

With my photography, I enjoy viewing life from the uncommon.

Get out and support the local-local.

lou-reed-circa-awesome.jpg
Lou Reed circa 1970-awesome

Lou Reed’s Spring Tour kicks off on April 20th in Northhampton, Massachusetts. Reed follows up his stop in Mass with a bunch of dates in NY, Knoxsville and Nashville. Then it’s off to UK for the summer. Lou turned 66 this month but he doesn’t let a little thing like Social Security slow him down. Take that David Bowie.

robert-plant-peace-dove.jpg
Robert Plant and his peace dove. And his excellent pants…

Robert Plant and Allison Krauss will play a couple of dates together in Louisville and Knoxville starting on April 19th before they travel up North to play the B of A Pavilion in Boston. Krauss performs some Zep covers during the live sets. And that’s no small deal. Covering Zep is either going to go incredible well or horribly wrong. And sometimes you might get lucky and make that song your own like Johnny did with Hurt. And like Krauss’ does when she covers Zep’s “When the Levee Breaks“. Plant’s prowess on stage remains unmatched and he has never stopped releasing music (good music) over the 20+ years following the breakup of Led Zeppelin. The Plant/Krauss tour runs through June. The tour’s isn’t hitting your city (it misses Seattle too, don’t feel bad)? Check your cable listings for a live performance from the pair running on MHD, the new HD music channel that actually plays uh, music.

happy-chichester-and-his-happy-hat.jpg
Happy Chichester and his Happy Hat…

Happy Chichester and RJD2 will be at Chop Suey on Saturday April 12th. Happy Chichester’s tune Shadows Remember the Day has the same feel as Radiohead’s, In Rainbows. Dreamy and melodic. No wonder Chichester has written songs that were recorded by The Afghan Whigs and Shawn Smith.

puppetry-of-the-penis.jpg
Puppetry of the Penis. April 29 – May 4th Act Theatre

Cherrybomb took in POTP a couple years back and based on her experience, gives you this advice. If you like to laugh to the point of crying, go see Puppetry of the Penis. If you like watching something while you clasp your hands across your face in some half-assed attempt to NOT see something, go see Puppetry of the Penis (by the way, you’re not fooling anyone with the hands on eyes thing). Finally, if you like seeing Penis’s being bent and twisted so they look like hairy-dick-pretzels, go see Puppetry of the Penis. Penis.

galactic-play-the-funky-music-white-boys.jpg
Galactic really does play that funky music…

Finally, Galactic is back in Seattle at The Tractor Tavern on Saturday May 17th. Last time Galactic funked their way through Seattle it was with Chali 2Na of Jurassic Five. This time around Galactic will funk it up with Stanton Moore and the Jazzy hands of Will Bernard and Wil Blades.

For more Garage shaking rawk and roll, check out The Rippers label, Shake Your Ass Records. SYA is based in Italy and has got one impressive catalog that throttles through nearly every cool musically genre. Check out The Mojomatics or the awesome Jack O’ Fire (JOF also has a bunch of Estrus ear worthy releases). JOF’s record, Forever (from 1996) will make you flip your Hillbilly lid.

The Other Side of the Mirror: Bob Dylan Live at the Newport Folk Festival (1963-1965)
NW Film Forum

Even if you know the true story behind Dylan’s performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, most of the footage in this flick will be new to your eyes. The moment Johnny Cash takes the stage and performs his own version of Dylan’s Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright, is magical. Johnny went on to record that song as well as two other Dylan covers later that year on his 17th record, Orange Blossom Special.

citizen-cope.jpg

Citizen Cope
Moore Theater
Citizen Cope has got a way with words. Then he takes those words and wraps them around beautiful, soulful music. And since I have Dylan on my mind, Cope (aka Clarence Greenwood) does an amazing rendition of Dylan’s Simple Twist of Fate that will kill you, softly. Busy on Friday like Cherrybomb? Citizen Cope is also at the Moore on Saturday.

Saturday, March 22nd:

Shawn Smith
King Cobra

Looking Ahead:

impaler-jonathan-sharkey.jpg
Jonathan the Impaler

Impaler is a biopic about Jonathan Sharkey. You know, the Satanic Vampire who ran for Governor of Minnesota in 2006? Anyways, while not running for Government office, Jonathon enjoys spending his time as a Satanic Dark Priest, Sanguinarian Vampyre and a Hecate Witch. This doc covers that in all it’s satanic majesty. Impaler is at the Central Cinema on Thursday, March 27 (presented by STIFF)

The Dollyrots hit Seattle on April 22nd at El Corazon. The Dollyrots do an awesome cover of Zodiac Mindwarp’s, There’s a Barbarian in the Back of My Car (get it on Snake Oil Supercharm, a trib to the awesome Zodiac Mindwarp). A mere three days later, The Relays, the excellent Who trib, will be at the Tractor Tavern on Friday, April 25th. Jim Fergusun (or Roger Daltry) looks exactly like Daltry when it comes to his pants and hair.

duran-duran-love-the-80s.jpg
Duran Duran and their hair, circa 1980-ish

Speaking of hair, Duran Duran will be at the WaMu Theater April 30. I love Duran Duran. But I’m not sure who is singing for them theses days. It can’t be Simon Le Bon. Because Simon Le Bon looks like this. Not like this. Anyways, they say it’s Simon Le Bon so I guess it’s Simon Le Bon. Even though the dude singing for them now looks like someone other than Simon Le Bon. Besides, Cherrybomb was always more of an Andy Taylor girl. And even though Taylor does not appear on this record and isn’t touring with the band, Simon Le Bon is still with the band. Take that Nickelback. Pre-sales for May 2008 gigs in Philly, Boston and NY started on March 17th while you were busy getting drunk.

throw-rag.jpg
Throw Rag – watch out, the punk rock circus is coming to Seattle…

Throw Rag is back in Seattle at King Cobra on Saturday, May 24th. A Throw Rag show is like a circus. Only with guitars, tattoos and loincloths. The band hasn’t played together very much in the last couple of years so if you like the circus, guitars and loincloths, you should be at the KC that night.

joey-belladonna.jpg
Joey Belladonna cries for the Indians…

Lastly, Joey Belladonna, former vocalist for Anthrax, will be at Studio Seven on Friday, April 18th. Joey’s former band mate Charlie Benante makes his own coffee now ’cause drummers gotta eat, ya’ know. Anyways, if you like your coffee with a little Anthrax (and who doesn’t?), sign up for monthly Charlie Coffee and get a free autographed Charlie Benante drum stick.

Now grab your drumsticks and GTFO already…

Joseph Arthur To Release 500 Records in 2008… 1

Posted on March 13, 2008 by DJC

joseph-arthur-shades.jpg
Joseph Arthur and his sunglasses…

Okay, I added a couple of zeros to that number but still, five awesome releases from Joseph Arthur is like Christmas coming early for anyone who likes great music. Take that Nickelback.

This spring marks the return of maverick songsmith Joseph Arthur with the release of two EPs – the raw, atmospheric pop of ‘Could We Survive’ (March 18th / Lonely Astronaut), followed by the near-techno and wonderfully chaotic ‘Crazy Rain’ (April 15th). Arthur and his own label, Lonely Astronaut Records, will be releasing a series of four EPs this year, leading up to the full-length ‘All You Need Is Nothing’ (August 5th). The final two will be available nationally May 13th and June 24th.

Arthur and his sweet suicide shades are performing at SXSW this week. Then it’s off to Dallas before heading back to Brooklyn for a record release at MOMR. Cherrybomb recommends that you check out JA live any chance you get. And while I would also tell you to pick up Arthur’s entire catalog, you should definitely make time for these four records, right now:

Come to Where I’m From (2000) – Download: In The Sun

Redemption’s Son (2002) – Download: Honey and the Moon

Our Shadows Will Remain (2004) – Download: Can’t Exist

Nuclear Daydream (2006) – Download: Nuclear Daydream and Slide Away

So it’s already that time again. You know, GTFO time. Anyways, Cherrybomb will be DJing a private party overlooking the Space Needle on Friday. I’d invite you, but that wouldn’t make it private party anymore, would it? But don’t despair. There is so much going on this week and this weekend, you won’t miss me. But if you don’t get out, you’ll miss a lot of great shows.

So what are you gonna do? Get The Fuck Out of course

Stubb’s BBQ (Austin, TX)
Is Motorhead making an appearance at SXSW this week? If you believe the official Motorhead website, the answer is yes. However, Stubb’s website makes no mention of Motorhead on their music calendar. What Stubb’s calendar does say is that the 3/13 bill includes artists like Serge Tankian, Tom Morello and Ben Harper performing songs from the upcoming movie, Body of War. The soundtrack is due out on March 18th. Public Enemy and Eddie Vedder (who performs with Ben Harper on the track “No More”) also contributed to the soundtrack. The film itself will is screening at Sundance on March 13th at 4:00 pm at The Paramount Theater in Austin.

Soundbite Seattle

Cherrybomb was at the Rendevoux Room on Saturday night chatting with a bartender about her love for SNB’s Neil of Steel. We then put on the new SNB record really loud, Cherrybomb drank a bunch of Gin then confessed to her lovely bar-mistress that she looked exactly like Kate Hudson, only with boobs. Gin is the best. But it might also be truth serum, so be careful who you drink it with. Anyways, the SNB connection to Seattle Soundbite is that Miss Simona, the hardcore drummer girl for SNB, works at Via Tribunali. To qualify for Soundbite, you must be in a band and also work in a restaurant.

Looking Ahead:

black-sabbath-black-and-white.jpg

On March 28th, Supernauty, the Seattle Black Sabbath cover band will be at The Blue Moon. Check this vid of Supernauty turning out “Sweet Leaf“. And since I was speaking of SNB earlier in this post, Seattle’s own Miss Simona also plays in an all-girl Black Sabbath tribute band, Mistress of Reality. MOR will play a couple of dates in Cali before jetting off to Spain for the rest of March.

shadow-mike-rick-and-chris.jpg

Shadow – L to R: Mike McCready, Rick Friel and Chris Friel

Flight to Mars Annual CCFA Benefit is back at The Box on May 5th. Feral Children are also on the bill. Best of all, McCready will perform a Hendrix trib that will include local rock ‘n’ brothers, Rick and Chris Friel. Both were in the Seattle hair band, Shadow (see big hair pix above). Rick and Chris also played with McCready in the excellent, The Rockfords with Carrie Akre. I love Rick Friel. He has always had the best hair. And every time I’ve seen him play, he gave it everything he had. Which is a lot. Take notes kids. You might learn something.

wasp-black-and-white.jpg

Speaking of hair, W.A.S.P is in Australia in April following up their recent US tour dates. Yeah, W.A.S.P is still a band. And codpieces with teeth is the new cowbell. Take that B.O.C.

dizzie-rascal-black-and-white.jpg

Dizzee Rascal and EL-P will be at Neumo’s on May 19th. It’s still kind of amazing to me that people seem to be finally catching onto EL-P. His 2007 record, I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead, caught lots of people by surprise. Hopefully, you were one of them. If you’re still saying who?, check out EL-P’s “Up All Night“. The combo of Dizzie and EL-P is unstoppable Hip-Hop. With a British accent. Both Dizzie and EL-P play SXSW at The Scoot Inn on 3/13 with Del the Funky Homosapien.

the-queers-black-and-white.jpg

And finally, The Queers will be at El Corazon on June 1st . Tickets are on sale now.

Man…it’s 12:30 on a Tuesday night. Do you know where your Cherrybomb is? All I can say is if you don’t get out, you’ll never find out. So, GTFO already…

Mark Lanegan and Isobel Campbell (of the stellar Belle and Sebastian) have announced they will play four live gigs in the UK. The super-duo hits London on June 10th at Shepard’s Bush Empire. Their second release, Sunday at Devil Dirt is set for release on May 5th. “Devil Dirt” follows-up to their 2006 record, Ballad of the Broken Seas. Tickets for the London and Manchester gigs are on sale now.

Urge Overkill To Tour…? 0

Posted on March 07, 2008 by DJC

urge-overkill-logo.jpg

After a one-off date for Nash Kato in February, Urge Overkill has scheduled a couple of live dates on the East Coast. Tickets for the UO gig in Washington, D.C. at the Black Cat go on sale today at 5:00 pm EST. Tickets for the April 29th show at The Bowery in NY and the April 30th show at The Middle East in Cambridge, MA (Suffrajett share the bill) are on sale now.

All Cherrybomb can say is if UO plays Seattle, my head is gonna explode.

No Visa for Pete Way…No Way… 0

Posted on March 06, 2008 by DJC

pete-way-is-waysted.jpg
Pete Way is Waysted

WTF, London? Why are you fucking with my man Pete Way? I mean, how could you deprive us of Pete fucking Way? Did we do something to piss you off? Because we’ve been pissing off a lot of people for like, the last eight years. Granted, Pete was probably completely drunk when he applied for his travel visa, but that never killed anyone. Not quickly anyways.

Speaking of anyways, the official UFO website confirmed yesterday that Pete’s Visa has been denied by the US Embassy in London despite the fact that the US had already approved it. So far, the Seattle UFO show that was originally scheduled at the Crocodile Cafe (which closed it’s doors abruptly in December after 18 years) is still on for El Corazon on Wednesday, May 7th. No real reliable speculation around who might stand in for one of the hottest Bass players to ever touch four fat strings, but I’m with one of my favorite rawk ‘n’ brawlers on this wishful thought, maybe they’ll get Lemmy.

lemmy-smoking-hot.jpg
Lemmy Motorhead at SXSW on March 13th.

Maybe if you see Lemmy and Motorhead at SXSW this year, you can ask him. That’s right, Motorhead will be SXSW at Stubbs BBQ on March 13th.

Thanks to Sleazegrinder for the Pete Way inside track…

GTFO: Bowie vs Bolan and Cherrybomb in The Gutter… 2

Wendy O has her Gunz Out. How about you…?

Okay. Here’s the deal. Cherrybomb is busy. I got all today’s Primary results to keep tabs on and The Gutter Twins show tonight at The Box. I’m actively stalking Greg Dulli and I’ve got to get this weekly GTFO entry out there so you don’t sit on your couch all week. So there you have it. Cherrybomb is a very busy girl. Life it short. Might die tomorrow. Clowns could eat me in my sleep. Locusts! Anyways, what I’m trying to say is I got to GO and so should you. After you read this blog of course…

t-rex-flier.jpg

Bowie vs T Rex Night
The Comet
David Bowie and Marc Bolan steel cage style at The Comet. I’d have to say the clear advantage goes to Bolan and T Rex except for two things. David Bowie’s giant veneer’s will blind you like that last time you stared directly at the sun, and Marc Bolan is dead. And this is a musical duel to the death, not a steel cage match. Still, Cherrybomb is gonna stick with advantage Rex. Mainly because Bowie stole all his ideas from Lou Reed. Take that Ziggy.

devil_and_daniel_johnston.jpg

Daniel Johnston will be at Neumo’s on April 17th. Johnston is an American folk icon. Johnson’s past is a mix of weird and wonderful. Both words define Johnston’s musical contributions. For more on that, see the tragically sad but remarkable biopic, The Devil and Daniel Johnston. For those of you in Austin or heading to Austin for SXSW this year, check out “Speeding Motorcycle“, a musical based on the Johnston song of the same name.

slough-feg-bourbon-knights-flier.jpg

Slough Feg will be back in Seattle at Neumo’s on April 22nd. Dr. H, a very good tequila drinking friend of Cherrybomb’s, saw the Feg when they swung through Seattle a month or so ago. He referred them as “very Thin Lizzyish with a spash of Priest and Maiden“. Dr. H…you totally had me at Thin Lizzyish.

the-dirtbombs-flier.jpg

Black Kids will be at Neumo’s on April 30. TBK’s I’m Not Gonna Teach You How To Dance With Him, is a permanent resident of Cherrybomb’s iPod. And speaking of things that live on my iPod, The Dirtbombs blow up Neumo’s on May 15.

led-zeppelin-seattle-1970.jpg

Finally, despite persistent rumors to the contrary, Led Zeppelin will not be touring. No fair. Word has it that Page and JPJ want to tour but Robert Plant has no interest. Which really isn’t surprising, but it is a bit depressing. Anyways, that frees up the $1500 I had stashed for Zep tickets. Guess I’m going to Mexico after all. Okay…I’m officially ready for the weekend and it’s only Tuesday…

Now, Get The Fuck Out…

Wendy’s back and so are you…

I don’t know about you, but my ears and liver are still recovering from Mos Generator and the DT’s last Friday. Wonder Woman is on her way to Colorado to fight injustice but before she left, WW gave all her records (around 200) to Cherrybomb. It’s like heavy metal Christmas in Cherrybomb’s house right now. My turntable is hot and I got the Aqua Net pink can out. Spandex might also be involved but you’ll never know. Anyways, one of the best things to happen to Seattle in a while, the King Cobra has got some of the best bills in the city this weekend and into March. Now get ready to flash your devil signs and Get The Fuck Out…

Saturday, March 1st:

King Cobra

Looking Ahead…:

thin-lizzy.jpg
The best of Thin Lizzy at King Cobra – March 20th

March 7th, Slim Cessna’s Auto Club will be at The Showbox In The Lounge. SCAC new record Cipher comes out on Alternative Tentacles, March 25th. On Saturday, March 8th, The Detroit Cobras and The Blakes will be at The High Dive. If I have to tell you this is one sweet bill, you know nothing about music. And since I started this post telling you King Cobra it taking over Seattle, here is more proof. KC will hold the first installment of monthly benefit shows for Music Cares on March 20th with The Cops, North Twin and Sunday Night Blackout. The Cobra twist on this one is all the bands are covering Thin Lizzy. For the love of Gary Moore the King Cobra is throwing down the gauntlet of boozy, musical excellence. Other clubs might take a hint…

doro-pesch-warlock.jpg

Devotchka does The Showbox (SoDo) on May 3rd.

Nash Kato the vox behind of one of Cherrybomb’s very favorite bands, Urge Overkill will play a one-off solo show in NYC on Friday, February 22nd at the Mercury Lounge.

Check the vid (above) for UO’s Sister Havana, and get a taste of how good tomorrow night will be if you’re in NY and smart enough to get to the Mercury Lounge.

Wonder Woman temporarily replaces Wendy O. Evildoers beware!

Dang. It feels like it was just a weekend, and now it’s practically the weekend again. Just the way I likes it. This weekend, Team Cherrybomb will be out in force on Friday. It’s a special and sad night for us as one of our own is moving to Colorado. Which, by all accounts, is a very nice place to be going off to. I mean, there’s the mountains, the clean air, the running into Robert Redford at Starbucks. I mean, it’s practically Seattle. Except in Seattle you run into Mark Arm at an out-of-the-way coffee shop that isn’t Starbucks. I’m gonna miss you, Wonder Woman. I can’t wait to kick Seattle’s ass with you one more time.

Now, where should you be this weekend, and beyond? Let me check your crystal balls and see…

Editor’s Note: Cherrybomb has no balls of her own. But if she did, they would be made of diamonds, not some cheap-ass Mikasa crystal. Also, I am repeating some stuff from last week because it bears repeating. Not ’cause I forgot…Also, I am repeating some stuff from last week because it bears repeating. Take that, brain cell.

Don’t I wish I was telling you RnR Soldiers were right here in Seattle tonight. However, we must be happy for our Oregon friends, as this is the second night of their ‘08 European tour. The band has already hit Spain and Paris, and by all reports, both locations are still mostly standing. The excellent So Many Musicians to Kill would improve even the most worthy record collection. Favorite RNRS verse? You say you love me, but I’ll make you hate me. You say you love me, but I don’t give a fuck about you. Straight and to the point. Just how I likes it…

Friday, February 22nd:

The DT’s
Mos Generator

@The Funhouse

If you miss this show, get to Bellingham on Saturday, March 29th, and catch The DT’s with Black Eyes and Neckties and Skullbot at the Rogue Hero. Cherrybomb wouldn’t miss this show, though. Especially since the clown on the flier for this show told me not too miss it. And I always do everything the clowns tell me to do.

Monotonix is like Gogol Bordello doing 110 down the highway with a tail light out, and a trunk full of nitrus. Black Eyes (or BENt) played live on KEXP last week, and the on-air performance broke my radio and my eardrums. Monotonix will invade Denver, CO on March 10th at Rhinoceropolis.

The Cool School
Northwest Film Forum
The Cool School is a trip back to the 1950’s art beat scene in LA. It includes interviews with Dennis Hopper and Frank Gehry, and focuses on the Ferus Gallery in LA, which held the very first Andy Warhol show. I think NWFF sums it up best here:

The Cool School is a vivid picture of the inspiring scene and shares the untold story of a group of scrappy artists that shook up the dull tastemakers, got arrested for obscenity, and ultimately established the importance of West Coast art.

The Cool School runs through Thursday, February 28th. And since I’m on the topic of Art, I was horribly remiss in not mentioning the opening of “A Cabinet Of Natural Curiosities” at the Roq La Rue on February 8th. While the gallery at The Roc will feature animals and other interpretations of living creatures, I love this piece by one of the shows featured artists, Lisa Petrucci (below)

josie-and-the-pussycats-lisa-petrucci.jpg

The wood art of Lisa Petrucci is sweet. And let’s face it. You haven’t really lived unless you have seen a painting of a naked woman on a piece of wood. The show also includes the macabre and prolific works of LA’s Liz McGrath. To further stick it to you that girls can do it all, McGrath’s band, Miss Derringer, just finished up a ten-stop tour of the West Coast.

Holy Hellgate. This show is right on, so Dig It. This show is so good, it’s gonna bring Cherrybomb to The Comet two nights in a row. Take that, liver. And in keeping with the Colorado theme for this post, Thee Emergency will be at The Rocket Room in CO on March 21st.

Looking Ahead:

the-supersuckers.jpg
The Supersuckers got stars and guitars…

The Supersuckers will play five shows around Colorado starting on March 1st. What a way to welcome a girl to town. The Supersuckers have got to be one of the hardest working bands in the world. Ed Spaghetti and crew played 139 shows last year.

Gary Louris will be at the Showbox on March 16th. Louris is the vocalist for one of the best bands you maybe never heard of, The Jayhawks (listen to Rainy Day Music. It’s excellent even if you don’t live in Seattle). Although I’m not sure what kind of hellish afterlife you live in that doesn’t involve The Jayhawks, I’m sure it’s horribly bland and flavorless.

pete-way-ufo.jpg
Pete Way back in the day…

UFO will be at El Corazon on May 7th. This is one of the many shows re-scheduled from The Croc. It features the original lineup, which includes Pete Way – the Bass Master of UFO, Waysted (who are touring now) and Fastway – clearly one of the greatest metal bands ever. At least that last point is verra clear to Cherrybomb. Not to digress, but check this vid from Waysted, “Heaven Tonight“. That spider-web never had a chance.

cheap-trick-john-varvatos-2008.png

I would like to end on a Cheap Trick note. Because who doesn’t like a happy ending? I adore Cheap Trick. Every time I see them, I feel like those girls who used to faint in the front row of a Beatles show. Anyways, designer John Varvatos used CT for his latest ad campaign. And it’s awesome. But seriously, is it me, or does Robin Zander just not age like the rest of us? Anyways, Cheap Trick will be live at Budokan again on April 24th.

See you then. Now, Get The Fuck Out.

Screw working for the weekend. And Loverboy for that matter. And Valentine’s Day. And Mike Reno. As a matter of fact, fuck Mike Reno and his headband. If I had a dollar for every time I heard “Hot Girls in Love” on the Himalaya at the traveling summertime carnie I would be like, 17. I mean rich. Now on to getting out…

Valentines Day, Thursday, February 14th:

The Cops

This bill if full of niceness. If you believe me, at least check out this podcast from The Cops and turn up the speakers. Then you will believe me and that’s what counts. That you are wrong and I am right. Every time.

35mm showings of two amazing movies staring two of the coolest men to ever grace the screen. Who would win in a Newman vs. McQueen throw down? Cherrybomb says it’s all about McQueen. In fact, every movie should star Steve McQueen and have at least one 11 minute car chase involving at least one hot, 68 Mustang. The End.

There is no excuse to miss this show. Shawn Smith released like 100 records already in 2008. And it’s only February mind you. Okay, Shawn only released three records so far in 2008 but that’s like more than most bands release in a year so take that Nickleback. Add Grayskul and you got a free throw down worth way more than the asking price.

Hot damn this is one sweet bill. A very handsome and rocksure friend of Cherrybomb’s said The Foxgloves had the same consistency of Super Sugar Smacks. And I’m thinking that’s crunchy and sweet but won’t rot your teeth. Anyways, if you can’t make this show you can catch The Whore Moans, The Earaches and The Hands at The Hands record release on Friday, February 29th at Neumo’s. Getting drunk somewhere else that night? Okay, The Hands will play live at noon (PST) on KEXP on Tuesday, February 19th. Stream that baby. Going to Canada to house hunting because you plan to relocate there sometime at the end of the year? The Paper Dolls will be at Pub 340 in Vancouver, BC on March 14. Phew…

Looking Ahead:

The DT’s will blow your face off…

The DT’s

The Funhouse
The DT’s will be at The Funhouse on Friday, February 22nd. The DT’s don’t get to Seattle enough for me and that’s mostly because they love to rock the shit out of their hometown Bellingham, Washington. And when the DT’s aren’t in Bellingham, they are probably being adored by their fans in Spain. Get out and seem ‘em while you can. Your face will thank you later. Mos Generator is also on the bill.

I know I say “no way are you missing this show” a lot, but MAN, no way are you missing this show. Anyways, the King Cobra has been open for a few weeks and I’m ashamed to admit I haven’t hit it yet. Thankfully, the power of Plaster and BOFE compel my evil ways to the King Cobra on February 28th.

orange-sunshine-motherfucker.jpg
Orange Sunshine from somewhere in the Hague

On Saturday, March 8th Lesbian, Mos Generator and Orange Sunshine (from the Netherlands) will be at The Comet. Whoa. Orange Sunshine is playing Seattle. April 5th will bring Seattle Metal Fest and Studio 7 together for lots of loud, sweaty, godless, loudness. Sweet, sweet sweaty loudness.

The Gossip will be in London on March 21st, wrapping up a six stop tour that included dates around France. A live DVD/Record two-fer called “Live in Liverpool” will be out soon on.

Southern Culture on the Skids…looks pretty good to me.

And finally, it must be that time of year again ’cause the SCOTS are back in Seattle on April 18th and 19th at The Tractor. Not that the SCOTS play Seattle every April but it seems that when the SCOTS blow into town, the sun comes out and the air is filled with the sound of Telecasters.

Gotta go…it’s noon somewhere…

No More Caucus For Me, Thanks…I’m Driving… 0

Posted on February 09, 2008 by DJC

caucus-for-2285.jpg
Precinct 2285 Seattle. Other precinct experiences here.

In Cherrybomb’s district it was all about Obama (who took every state in today’s election activity). Obama won 2.6 of the four delegates in my precinct and Clinton received 1.4 (percentages are rounded up or down). Confused on how that works yet? Yup, me too. And I wasn’t alone. The volunteers in my caucus location admitted they were “completely unprepared” to deal with the huge turnout. The caucus was poorly organized – there was a lot of shouting, and the level of frustration among attendees and volunteers was thick. At one point, someone shouted at a volunteer who was attempting to explain the complicated caucus process, yelling “You’re confusing us” at a wildly inappropriate moment. Granted, she was easily 98 years old, and when you’re 98, you pretty much have the right to be as wildly inappropriate whenever you please. At any time you want. And I guess you get to shout. A lot. Still, your sweet old Granny was the one who had the balls to say what we were all thinking.

I guess I was surprised to observe how archaic the actual caucus process was. Vote totals were compiled by hand-notching-the-barrel-of-your-shotgun style, but with pencil and paper. The one guy who defied everyone in the room by staying with Richardson asked the crowd if they thought Obama would veep for Clinton. That statement got him laughed at by a few Clinton supporters. Classy. If that wasn’t enough, an Obama supporter added some spit with a friendly , “what makes you think Clinton wants him in the first place,” quite forgetting that all the Richardson guy wanted was an answer. Not to be heckled. Then, there was a bunch of good old fashioned “lobbying” by the respective Clinton/Obama camps. All the undecided caucus people drank either Clinton-aid or Obama juice and became un-undecided.

In the end, when it was time to choose the delegates (the actual people to delegate for the candidates in April) and their alternates, nobody knew what to do, or why we needed to do it. But since we were all full of Kool-Aid and stuff, we all wrote six names down on a scrap of paper – because 2.6 rounds up to 3…plus an alternate for each…OK? Which made me remember why I hated math in the first place, but I guess a situation like this reminds you that math is really kind of important. We then gave these pieces of paper to someone who hopefully knew what to do with them.

Caucus is defined by it’s grass-roots, get-to-know-your-neighbors kind of shin dig, but Cherrybomb’s just didn’t have that spirit. The initial excitement derived from the buzz of what democracy in action might be like wore off quick, and ended up leaving me with the kind headache you only get from drinking the bottom shelf stuff. Not that I drink that swill. And, while I’m not sorry I went, the overall experience was a bit of a buzz kill. Because somewhere along the way, the Democratic party seems completely bent on dividing itself again. And we can’t do that this time.

And I hate buzz kills. Don’t you?

Come on and Caucus… 1

Posted on February 08, 2008 by DJC

john-mccain-might-be-president.jpg
Unless this is what you want to see in November, get out and caucus…

In a nutshell, the Washington State Primary means nothing if you swing to the left. Democratic delegates will be selected by caucus and state conventions this year. Find out where your caucus location is and go. By the way, caucus is tomorrow, Saturday, February 9th. Come hell or hangover, Cherrybomb is there with an open a (mostly) undecided mind.

I don’t need to tell you how important this election is. If you’re not registered to vote, you can register at your caucus location. If you don’t do anything this country is going to go to shit by way of Iran. I know I’ve had enough.

Have you?
