Son of Terror, The Movie… 0

Posted on October 08, 2008 by DJC

Son of Terror, 2008. A film by Anthony De Gennaro.

Local Seattle filmmaker, Anthony De Gennaro will be screening his new movie, Son of Terror, at the Rendezvous JewelBox Theater October 28th and 29th. De Gennaro had this to say about the inspiration for Son:

“Son of Terror” examines the inner workings of a mentally ill person set on the stage of a monster movie. Inspired by the homeless problem in Pioneer Square, Seattle, this film takes a fictional look at the horror of mental illness. You will have a front row seat inside this character’s mind and experience the reality of his inner struggle.

An independent movie shot on film, Son of Terror was actually filmed in Seattle’s historic, and sometimes creepy, Pioneer Square. The screenings at the JewelBox (there will be two shows per night at  6:15 & 8:15 PM) are only $6. The proceeds from the screenings will help get Son of Terror entered into movie festivals.

David Ball’s Life in Babylon… 1

Posted on August 25, 2008 by DJC

David Ball, from Libertine.

Ball’s upcoming show, Libertine, opened on Thursday, August 21st at Babylon Falling in San Fransisco.  Ball says Libertine addresses our dependency on human relationships and their outcome, as well as broader aspects of social conflict. Damn, that’s pretty heady.

David Ball lives and works in San Fransisco. You can check out more of Ball’s work here.

Coming Soon: Rob Zombie’s T-Rex, The Movie… 1

Posted on July 13, 2008 by DJC

Tyrannosaurus Rex, a movie by Rob Zombie, coming in 2009.

Even though Zombie ripped off Lemmy on the Motherfucker/SOB joke, I’m okay with that. That’s because it looks like Danny Trejo will play the lead (along with Zombie’s wife Sheri Moon) in Zombie’s upcoming flick, due out in 2009. And since we all know Danny Trejo is 100% motherfucker, this movie will undoubtedly be the balls. Zombie had this to say about T-Rex via his official website:

My next live action feature is called TYRANNOSAURUS REX. I don’t want to give away any details yet, but I will tell you that it has nothing to do with dinosaurs.

I don’t care what this flick is about as long as Danny Trejo is in it. For more on Trejo, check out the 2005 documentary, Champion. It chronicles Trejo’s extraordinary life, including a trip back to Trejo’s old cell at San Quentin Prison.

Isaac Pierro, Natural Born Killer… 0

Posted on June 21, 2008 by DJC

Isaac PIerro, I Killed Qupid, 2008.

Artist Isaac Pierro says the hardest emotion for him to show through his art is Happiness. If you look through Pierro’s catalog, this may not come as a surprise to you. And that’s because Pierro’s subjects often look like your old Teddy Bear or an innocent cartoon character from your past. Except your favorite teddy is holding a knife, drenched in blood.

In case you’re wondering, Pierrio’s Qupid get’s it in the skull with an ax. Proving once and for all that love does in fact, stink.

Isaac Pierro, Portrait of a Killer, 2005.

Pierro’s, Portrait (above), is a prime example of his mastery of sweet childhood memory meets slasher-killer run amuck in Disneyland.

Isaac Pierro, This One Goes Above Your Bar, 2007

I think by now that you might get the sense that Pierro gets Walt Disney in much the same way that horror-photog Joshua Hoffine gets Disney. In the most macabre, personal and primal way.

Isaac Pierro, Hangover Head, 2007.

In, Hangover Head, Pierro identifies so closely with what Walt Disney’s hangovers were like, you might think he’s been inside your head after a Saturday night bender. At least I did. And I know what a hangover is like. If you read this blog on a regular basis, you know that you can trust me on that one.

Isaac Pierro, Looking Back.

Lastly, I had to post Pierro’s Looking Back, so I could be sure that you would take a long, last look at Pierro’s incredible work. How could you not? Looking at Looking Back is like seeing through Pierro’s own eyes when he saw this piece of broken-up wood. Pierro’s book, I Killed Qupid, is due out in 2009. Peices from Pierro’s Qupid will be at the Distinction Gallery in Escondido, California through July 5th.

Shawn Barber – Tattoo Artist… 2

Posted on May 05, 2008 by DJC

Shawn Barber – Portrait of artist Tara McPherson oil on canvas – 2005

Shawn Barber has been chronicling tattoo culture by way of his paintbrush for nearly ten years. Barbers’ second book, the 250 page “Forever & Ever” came out in March. Like his first book, Tattooed Portraits, Forever and Ever showcases Barber’s impressive impressions of tattoo culture while going deep into the history and mechanics of getting inked. Barber, who credits Spanish painter Diego Velazquez as an early inspiration, started drawing art on real people himself in 2006.

Shawn Barber. Ink on skin (unfinished) 2008.

As you can see, Barbers’ gotten pretty good at that too.

Shawn Barber – Portrait of artist Paul Booth oil on canvas – 2006

The Velazquez influence is evident in his portrait of hardcore tattoo artist, Paul Booth (above). Barber’s group stint at Paul Booth’s Last Rites Gallery in New York ended in April but you can catch Barber solo this Summer in California with shows at Billy Shire Fine Arts in Culver City in July and San Fransisco’s The Shooting Gallery in August.

Shawn Barber – Portrait of then Sixx-less artist Kat von D oil on canvas – 2006

Original works by Barber can fetch in upwards of $5000. Check out Barber’s official site for more. Some of it’s NSFW but that’s only bad news if you have a job.

Snoop Dogg Singing in German? It Must be 420… 0

And since today actually is 420, let’s all take a bong break, and enjoy this German cell phone commercial featuring Snoop Dogg emerging from a smoking fridge, singing in German. There’s also a couple of hot chicks jumping around in shorts all covered in bubbles. ‘Cause that’s how Snoop rolls yo.

We Feel Fine… 1

We Feel Fine “madness” search…

We Feel Fine was created by Jonathan Harris, a 29 year old Brooklyn native. Harris has won more Webby Awards than you can shake your computer mouse at. And with good reason. Bitch is SMART.

If you’ve never seen We Feel Fine, get ready to be totally freaked. Type in a word that describes how you feel, and We Feel Fine finds people experiencing the same emotions at that very moment. Trippy.

robin-zander-feels-fine.jpg
Robin Zander wants you to want me…

Earlier this year, Harris opened his newest creation, I Want You To Want Me, commissioned by the New York Museum of Modern Art. IWYTWM culls data (like turn-on’s, the persons age or favorite busy-time position) from on-line dating services and compiles them, out of context, in it’s database. The data is then played back to viewers as a “mirror” in which they might see a part of themselves. Whoa…

So how are you feeling today…?

Comic Forum – Frye Art Museum – Fry Auditorium
Peter Bagge was the managing editor for R. Crumb’s classic comic, Weirdo before launching his own comic, Neat Stuff. And as excellent as all that stuff is, Bagge is also the creator of Hate comics (above) which, unless you lived in a cave on the mountains during the 90’s you are very much aware of. Ellen Forney and Jim Woodring are also part of the forum. Woodring is married to Dianna Young-Blanchard of the awesome DT’s and occasionally does posters for the band. Those things are definitely worth collecting.

In other eye candy news, local photographer and artist, Neil Doherty, is showing some of his gorgeous B&W’s at Marcus’s Martini Heaven in Pioneer Square. The photos were taken between 2003 and 2008 in Belgrade, Amsterdam, Serbia, Bosnia, the US and Canada. Doherty really gets around. But I think Doherty sums what he does best with this statement from his show bio:

Lou Reed’s Spring Tour kicks off on April 20th in Northhampton, Massachusetts. Reed follows up his stop in Mass with a bunch of dates in NY, Knoxsville and Nashville. Then it’s off to UK for the summer. Lou turned 66 this month but he doesn’t let a little thing like Social Security slow him down. Take that David Bowie.

robert-plant-peace-dove.jpg
Robert Plant and his peace dove. And his excellent pants…

Robert Plant and Allison Krauss will play a couple of dates together in Louisville and Knoxville starting on April 19th before they travel up North to play the B of A Pavilion in Boston. Krauss performs some Zep covers during the live sets. And that’s no small deal. Covering Zep is either going to go incredible well or horribly wrong. And sometimes you might get lucky and make that song your own like Johnny did with Hurt. And like Krauss’ does when she covers Zep’s “When the Levee Breaks“. Plant’s prowess on stage remains unmatched and he has never stopped releasing music (good music) over the 20+ years following the breakup of Led Zeppelin. The Plant/Krauss tour runs through June. The tour’s isn’t hitting your city (it misses Seattle too, don’t feel bad)? Check your cable listings for a live performance from the pair running on MHD, the new HD music channel that actually plays uh, music.

Happy Chichester and RJD2 will be at Chop Suey on Saturday April 12th. Happy Chichester’s tune Shadows Remember the Day has the same feel as Radiohead’s, In Rainbows. Dreamy and melodic. No wonder Chichester has written songs that were recorded by The Afghan Whigs and Shawn Smith.

Puppetry of the Penis. April 29 – May 4th Act Theatre

Cherrybomb took in POTP a couple years back and based on her experience, gives you this advice. If you like to laugh to the point of crying, go see Puppetry of the Penis. If you like watching something while you clasp your hands across your face in some half-assed attempt to NOT see something, go see Puppetry of the Penis (by the way, you’re not fooling anyone with the hands on eyes thing). Finally, if you like seeing Penis’s being bent and twisted so they look like hairy-dick-pretzels, go see Puppetry of the Penis. Penis.

That Is Not An El Camino… 2

Posted on March 17, 2008 by DJC

pontiac-g8-el-camino-2010.jpg
The 2010 Pontiac El Camino G8 Sport Truck

The folks at Pontiac have officially lost their minds. Because nothing could convince me that the picture above is in any way, an El Camino. Pontiac’s redux of the mythical El Camino is the latest in the ongoing bastardization of cars that were once cool. It also one-up’s Fords uncool assault on the Shelby this year.

Due out in 2010, it’s the first time since 1987 that the El Camino has been manufactured. Why does every car manufactured these days have to look 50 cents short of a Toyota Camry? And while I definitely don’t mean to imply that Pontiac has actually manufactured an El Camino, you might be asking Cherrybomb “why is the 2008 El Camino not really an El Camino?”

Because this, is an El Camino:

el-camino-1970-ss.jpg
The Real Deal – 1970 El Camino SS

It’s rumored that a 1972 El Camino owned by Frank Sinatra sold at an East Coast auction for $50K. Mint vintage generations of the El Camino routinely sell in upwards of $25K. Cherrybomb’s friend, Frankie Laughing Gas drove a 1970’s purple El Camino. Until he crashed it into a wall while a young Cherrybomb sat in the back seat.

Those were good times.

Anyways, all I know is two things: Pontiac didn’t make no El Camino. And if Mustang decides to regurgitate a version of the 1971 Mach 1, I’m calling Frankie Laughing Gas and we’re driving into that wall again. Oh wait…they did that in 2003.

Better call Frankie.

*Editors Note: In regards to the author’s comments about the 2008 Mustang Sheby, the author is aware that the 2008 Shelby redesign was based more on the 1968 Shelby model and not the 1967 Shelby provided in this link. But that still makes the 2008 Shelby fat, and ugly. Like your mother. *

Dance Lessons With James Brown

According to James Brown, “the Boogaloo is one of the hardest dances in the world“. Unless you’re James Brown of course. After watching this vid Cherrybomb realized a couple of things. First, I need to brush up on my Soul Train dance moves. I’ve been doing it all wrong. Second, James Brown is awesome. Anyways, in the words of the Godfather himself, this vid is gonna blow your mind.

Goldmember Goes Organic… 0

Goldmember goes organic – 24K Gold Plated vibrator

Oh how I love Current TV. Check out this five minute, viewer produced piece on the London Sex Shop, Organic Pleasures. Everyone should have a 24 K Gold Plated dildo. Everyone. Not just me. Opened in 2007, Organic Pleasures carries loads of toys and features a line of organic sex products that includes organic lube. Which is cool because have you ever looked at the ingredients on a tube of lube? No? Yeah, me either but I bet you can’t pronounce them. Anyways, being all green is really sexy now so I’m pretty sure if you whip out your fancy organic lube you’re totally getting laid. I mean, finally getting laid. What a relief. For your hand.

Personally, Cherrybomb thinks Organic Pleasures version of Plaster Caster, Cloneboy, would make a great birthday gift for your favorite nympho-on-the-go. The mythical Detachable Penis is no longer just a song that commercial radio will not play. It’s a reality.

I have to say I feel obligated to tell you when I see a great music video, since I’m pretty sure it’s nearly impossible to see any videos these days. Anyways, Muse’s, Knights of Cydonia, has everything you need to make a great video. Guitars, a hot blonde chick, Robots, a guy that looks like Clint Eastwood, guns that fire lasers, Cowboys, a guy that looks like Freddy Mercury, Motorcycles and a Unicorn.

I don’t know about you, but my ears and liver are still recovering from Mos Generator and the DT’s last Friday. Wonder Woman is on her way to Colorado to fight injustice but before she left, WW gave all her records (around 200) to Cherrybomb. It’s like heavy metal Christmas in Cherrybomb’s house right now. My turntable is hot and I got the Aqua Net pink can out. Spandex might also be involved but you’ll never know. Anyways, one of the best things to happen to Seattle in a while, the King Cobra has got some of the best bills in the city this weekend and into March. March 7th, Slim Cessna’s Auto Club will be at The Showbox In The Lounge. SCAC new record Cipher comes out on Alternative Tentacles, March 25th. On Saturday, March 8th, The Detroit Cobras and The Blakes will be at The High Dive. If I have to tell you this is one sweet bill, you know nothing about music. And since I started this post telling you King Cobra it taking over Seattle, here is more proof. KC will hold the first installment of monthly benefit shows for Music Cares on March 20th with The Cops, North Twin and Sunday Night Blackout. The Cobra twist on this one is all the bands are covering Thin Lizzy. For the love of Gary Moore the King Cobra is throwing down the gauntlet of boozy, musical excellence. Other clubs might take a hint…

Sharon Stone Loves Animals… 1

sharon-stone-rabbit-paw.jpg
Stone and her “lucky” rabbit’s foot at a post-Oscar party

…dead ones. It seems every time I have the misfortune of seeing a photo of Sharon Stone she is draped in some dead animal skin. This week however, Sharon decided to play it safe and showed up at a post-Oscar party wearing a white suit with a white rabbit paw pinned to the lapel. Sharon Stone is a classy lady. I think the only animal Sharon has yet to adorn is a fucking Yeti and that’s because Yeti is in hiding. From Sharon Stone that is…

sharon-stone-and-her-cape-of-death.jpg
Sharon Stone in a Fendi fur carpet…

I’m really confused. Isn’t LA warm? Maybe Sharon thinks this monstrosity helps bring out the color in her dead eyes. I mean, everyone knows that the “light” from dead animal souls is really flattering.

sharon-stone-blue-fur.jpg
Sharon Stone in the blue wrap of death…

Okay, so this (above) has to be fake because I know of no animals with blue fur. On this planet anyway. Perhaps Sharon had the Cookie Monster aced so she could stay warm. Anyways, Cherrybomb thinks wearing any fur is gross but wearing blue fur totally makes you look old. And fat.

sharon-stone-fur-hat-bag-coat-scarf.jpg
Sharon Stone says there is no such thing as too much fur…

Hello! I’m Sharon Stone, actress and former Burger King spokesperson. Here is a photo of me out in LA. As you can see, LA is very cold this time of year. Because the weather in Los Angeles can be so harsh, I have created a checklist for myself so I can be adequately prepared in the event of a winter apocolypse:

Fur coat? Check.

Fur hat? Check.

Fur Scarf? Check.

Fur trimmed handbag? Check.

Security guard posing as “random smiling guy” to protect me from PETA? Check.

Dignity? Chec…wait a minute! That’s a trick question. I’m Sharon Stone. I have no dignity!

Zdsislaw Beksinski – had Dali lived forever 1

Posted on February 23, 2008 by DJC

Zdsislaw Beksinski - Dali if he could have lived forever.

Cherrybomb likes art. Salvador Dali has always been a favorite. How the beautiful and disturbing world of Zdsislaw Beksinski was unknown to me before now is beyond me. Beksinski’s would have turned 79 last week if his life had not been cut short by a teenage friend of his caretaker. The teen is currently serving 25 years in a Warsaw prison. And while that sounds pretty bad, most prison sentences in Poland are not carried out due to severe overcrowding.

zdzislaw_beksinski-horse-and-rider.jpg

Some of Beksinski’s original, signed works are available here. Beksinski never gave names to his works, many of which can be found in the book, The Fantastic Art of Zdsislaw Beksinski.

Wonder Woman temporarily replaces Wendy O. Evildoers beware!

Dang. It feels like it was just a weekend, and now it’s practically the weekend again. Just the way I likes it. This weekend, Team Cherrybomb will be out in force on Friday. It’s a special and sad night for us as one of our own is moving to Colorado. Which, by all accounts, is a very nice place to be going off to. I mean, there’s the mountains, the clean air, the running into Robert Redford at Starbucks. I mean, it’s practically Seattle. Except in Seattle you run into Mark Arm at an out-of-the-way coffee shop that isn’t Starbucks. I’m gonna miss you, Wonder Woman. I can’t wait to kick Seattle’s ass with you one more time.

Now, where should you be this weekend, and beyond? Let me check your crystal balls and see…

Editor’s Note: Cherrybomb has no balls of her own. But if she did, they would be made of diamonds, not some cheap-ass Mikasa crystal. Also, I am repeating some stuff from last week because it bears repeating. Not ’cause I forgot…Also, I am repeating some stuff from last week because it bears repeating. Take that, brain cell.

The Cool School is a trip back to the 1950’s art beat scene in LA. It includes interviews with Dennis Hopper and Frank Gehry, and focuses on the Ferus Gallery in LA, which held the very first Andy Warhol show. I think NWFF sums it up best here:

The Cool School is a vivid picture of the inspiring scene and shares the untold story of a group of scrappy artists that shook up the dull tastemakers, got arrested for obscenity, and ultimately established the importance of West Coast art.

The Cool School runs through Thursday, February 28th. And since I’m on the topic of Art, I was horribly remiss in not mentioning the opening of “A Cabinet Of Natural Curiosities” at the Roq La Rue on February 8th. While the gallery at The Roc will feature animals and other interpretations of living creatures, I love this piece by one of the shows featured artists, Lisa Petrucci (below)

josie-and-the-pussycats-lisa-petrucci.jpg

The wood art of Lisa Petrucci is sweet. And let’s face it. You haven’t really lived unless you have seen a painting of a naked woman on a piece of wood. The show also includes the macabre and prolific works of LA’s Liz McGrath. To further stick it to you that girls can do it all, McGrath’s band, Miss Derringer, just finished up a ten-stop tour of the West Coast.

The Supersuckers got stars and guitars…

The Supersuckers will play five shows around Colorado starting on March 1st. What a way to welcome a girl to town. The Supersuckers have got to be one of the hardest working bands in the world. Ed Spaghetti and crew played 139 shows last year.

Gary Louris will be at the Showbox on March 16th. Louris is the vocalist for one of the best bands you maybe never heard of, The Jayhawks (listen to Rainy Day Music. It’s excellent even if you don’t live in Seattle). Although I’m not sure what kind of hellish afterlife you live in that doesn’t involve The Jayhawks, I’m sure it’s horribly bland and flavorless.

Pete Way back in the day…

UFO will be at El Corazon on May 7th. This is one of the many shows re-scheduled from The Croc. It features the original lineup, which includes Pete Way – the Bass Master of UFO, Waysted (who are touring now) and Fastway – clearly one of the greatest metal bands ever. At least that last point is verra clear to Cherrybomb. Not to digress, but check this vid from Waysted, “Heaven Tonight“. That spider-web never had a chance.

cheap-trick-john-varvatos-2008.png

I would like to end on a Cheap Trick note. Because who doesn’t like a happy ending? I adore Cheap Trick. Every time I see them, I feel like those girls who used to faint in the front row of a Beatles show. Anyways, designer John Varvatos used CT for his latest ad campaign. And it’s awesome. But seriously, is it me, or does Robin Zander just not age like the rest of us? Anyways, Cheap Trick will be live at Budokan again on April 24th.

See you then. Now, Get The Fuck Out.

Wendy proves all Rock really needs is tape, a guitar and a microphone…

Screw working for the weekend. And Loverboy for that matter. And Valentine’s Day. And Mike Reno. As a matter of fact, fuck Mike Reno and his headband. If I had a dollar for every time I heard “Hot Girls in Love” on the Himalaya at the traveling summertime carnie I would be like, 17. I mean rich. Now on to getting out…

Valentines Day, Thursday, February 14th:

The Cops
The Femurs
Ms. Led
C’mon C’mon

This bill if full of niceness. If you believe me, at least check out this podcast from The Cops and turn up the speakers. Then you will believe me and that’s what counts. That you are wrong and I am right. Every time.

Northwest Film Forum
35mm showings of two amazing movies staring two of the coolest men to ever grace the screen. Who would win in a Newman vs. McQueen throw down? Cherrybomb says it’s all about McQueen. In fact, every movie should star Steve McQueen and have at least one 11 minute car chase involving at least one hot, 68 Mustang. The End.

Friday, February 15h:

The Ruby Doe
Sunday Night Blackout

High DiveFREE
There is no excuse to miss this show. Shawn Smith released like 100 records already in 2008. And it’s only February mind you. Okay, Shawn only released three records so far in 2008 but that’s like more than most bands release in a year so take that Nickleback. Add Grayskul and you got a free throw down worth way more than the asking price.

The Bug Nasties
The Blue Moon

Slabtown (Portland)
Slabtown is a favorite of BarFly magazine. The Electric Kisses know all the best places to rock and drink.

The Foxgloves
The Paper Dolls

The Comet
Hot damn this is one sweet bill. A very handsome and rocksure friend of Cherrybomb’s said The Foxgloves had the same consistency of Super Sugar Smacks. And I’m thinking that’s crunchy and sweet but won’t rot your teeth. Anyways, if you can’t make this show you can catch The Whore Moans, The Earaches and The Hands at The Hands record release on Friday, February 29th at Neumo’s. Getting drunk somewhere else that night? Okay, The Hands will play live at noon (PST) on KEXP on Tuesday, February 19th. Stream that baby. Going to Canada to house hunting because you plan to relocate there sometime at the end of the year? The Paper Dolls will be at Pub 340 in Vancouver, BC on March 14. Phew…

Looking Ahead:

The DT’s will blow your face off…

The DT’s

The Funhouse
The DT’s will be at The Funhouse on Friday, February 22nd. The DT’s don’t get to Seattle enough for me and that’s mostly because they love to rock the shit out of their hometown Bellingham, Washington. And when the DT’s aren’t in Bellingham, they are probably being adored by their fans in Spain. Get out and seem ‘em while you can. Your face will thank you later. Mos Generator is also on the bill.

Book of Black Earth

I know I say “no way are you missing this show” a lot, but MAN, no way are you missing this show. Anyways, the King Cobra has been open for a few weeks and I’m ashamed to admit I haven’t hit it yet. Thankfully, the power of Plaster and BOFE compel my evil ways to the King Cobra on February 28th.

orange-sunshine-motherfucker.jpg
Orange Sunshine from somewhere in the Hague

On Saturday, March 8th Lesbian, Mos Generator and Orange Sunshine (from the Netherlands) will be at The Comet. Whoa. Orange Sunshine is playing Seattle. April 5th will bring Seattle Metal Fest and Studio 7 together for lots of loud, sweaty, godless, loudness. Sweet, sweet sweaty loudness.

beth-ditto.jpg
Beth Ditto of The Gossip

The Gossip will be in London on March 21st, wrapping up a six stop tour that included dates around France. A live DVD/Record two-fer called “Live in Liverpool” will be out soon on.

southern-culture-on-the-skids.jpg
Southern Culture on the Skids…looks pretty good to me.

And finally, it must be that time of year again ’cause the SCOTS are back in Seattle on April 18th and 19th at The Tractor. Not that the SCOTS play Seattle every April but it seems that when the SCOTS blow into town, the sun comes out and the air is filled with the sound of Telecasters.

Gotta go…it’s noon somewhere…

Ash To Play NYC on St. Patrick’s Day… 0

Posted on February 12, 2008 by DJC

Ash – Clones from 2004

I have Sleazegrinder to thank for so many things and getting hip to Ash is one of them. Anyways, the great and powerful Ash (watch the vid for “Clones”, above with the speakers all the way up) just announced they will play a gig at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn on Monday, March, 17th. Another name for March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day. Which officially makes Brooklyn, NY the best place to spend this coming St. Patrick’s Day. Damn you New York! Why are you so far away from Seattle. Ash and Nick Cave (who performs at the Plug Awards on March 6th) all in one month? No fair.
