Alexander McQueen, RIP.

Although details regarding the death of designer Alexander McQueen are limited, it’s rumored that McQueen hung himself.  McQueen’s untimely death comes less than a week after his own Mother’s passing.

Alexander McQueen’s impact on the world of fashion was nothing short of remarkable. The young Britt was known for his theatrical and envelope pushing fashion shows as well as his designs which many consider wearable works of art. Alexander McQueen was only 40 years old. His sudden passing is as shocking as it is sad.

RIP Alexander McQueen. You will be deeply missed.

Howard Zinn was 87.

Keith Richards gives up booze?

Keith Richards hasn’t touched a drop of alcohol for over four months, according to a  source close to the 67 year old Rolling Stone. Recently Courtney Love said she wanted to compare her liver to Richards as they live “similar lifestyles”. And while that request would be enough for anyone but me to stop boozing, apparently it was band mate Ron Wood’s downwards trip down the hooch-hall-of-shame that caused Keef to stop calling his best friend, Jack Daniels.

Musician Jay Reatard, rest in peace baby.

Angry garage-punker Jay Lindsey, a.k.a. Jay Reatard, was found dead today in his home in Memphis, TN. Reatard apparently died in his sleep last night. No other details about Reatards passing (which yours truly has been hoping was just a mean Internet prank for the last few hours) have been released. However, a “Tweet” from Reatard just a few days ago said that he was feeling “sick”.

Jay Reatard was a very talented and innovative performer with bright future potential. He will be missed…

1/14/10 Update: According to the Memphis PD, Jay Reatard’s death is now being investigated as a homicide.

Slayer’s Tom Araya.

The American Carnage Tour, which was scheduled to kick off in Seattle on January 18th, has been canceled. Despite trying other treatments, Slayer vocalist Tom Araya will undergo surgery later this month to help correct a severe disc issue in his back.

All tour dates for American Carnage through April have been postponed. All tickets will be honored when new dates are scheduled sometime in the Spring.

On a personal note, I experienced a very similar back problem many years ago and the pain is quite unbelievable. Luckily (as noted in the post on Slayer.net), the surgery success rate is very high so, we can all expect Mr. Araya to be back to kicking the shit out of our ears in a few months.

Vintage Steven Tyler.

Reps for both Steven Tyler and Child and Family Services of New Hampshire have confirmed that Dream On, An Intimate Evening with Steven Tyler, has been canceled. Child and Family Services says they hope to reschedule the event once Tyler has fully recovered. Which sadly might be longer than expected.

Tyler’s doctor Brian McKeon says that in addition the current treatment for his painkiller addiction, Tyler will also need additional surgery for his knees and feet in the near future. McKeon said that despite tapping into other types of treatment and alternative therapy to help heal the forever frontman of Aerosmith, Tyler’s pain has become worse…:

The balance between managing his pain and avoiding addiction is tenuous and difficult and his bravery in persevering through rigorous touring is admirable.

Steven Tyler issued a statement today saying that he will be heading to rehab to kick his dependence on pain killers. For once, I’m not going to make any crass jokes because while this news comes as relief for Tyler, his family and his fans, it’s also pretty sad. Says Tyler:

With the help of my family and team of medical professionals, I am taking responsibility for the management of my pain and am eager to be back on the stage. I love Aerosmith; I love performing as the lead singer in Aerosmith. I am grateful for all of the support and love I am receiving and am committed to getting things taken care of.

Despite Tyler and Aerosmith’s historical fucked-up-ness, it’s worth wondering aloud if Tyler would have found himself in this position again if he hadn’t injured himself so severely this past summer. At any rate, I just want my Motherfucking Rainbow healthy, clean and back where he belongs. Fronting Aerosmith.
