The Get Up Kids, On With The Show. From 2001’s Eudora. For K and his hate/hate relationship with Motley.
Despite SKYPE’s best efforts to prevent Episode #40 of The Movies About Girls Podcast from happening without yours truly, the best fucking podcast on movies could not be stopped! From Devil Girl to pornographic Christmas cards to thong thiefs, we covered it all. You can listen to Episode #40here or just click the podcast button on the right of this page to link to The Movies About Girls website. Dig it.
Also, if you’re searching for your spandex and Aqua Net(pink can, ‘natch) after listening to our Daily Earwig today, The Get Up Kids cover of Motley Crue’s“On With the Show”, you can find it on TGUK2001 record, Eudora. The record is full of alt versions of everything from Bowie to The Cure.
The Kids disbanded back in 2005, but have been active this year following the 10th Anniversary, double-vinyl reissue of their 1999 record, Something to Write Home About in September. The band is currently in the midst of a massive tour that concludes in March in Tokyo.
Kati Kovacs – Rock and Roller. Live, 1974. The Hungarian love child of Joan Jett and Janis Joplin? Ön jobb hisz ez…
Well Hung is a red hot compilation of 1970’s Hungarian Funk-Rock. Yeah that’s right, Hungarian Funk-Rock. What did you think I was talking about? Anyway, check out Add mar uram azesot, a cut from the 20 track comp by my new personal hero, Kati Kovacs.
Happy New Year to you. Hey, I know it’s still New Year’s Eve for most of you but I’ll be hydrating for most of today so this list will likely be my last entry for 2008. I want to thank everyone for their support this year especially the RDK, Freddy Pants, Miss E, Surly, LP, G, AFJ, JB, Wonder Woman, Apec, Dr. H, Irish, Amyl, the baddest motherfucker of all motherfuckers, Sleazegrinder, NaterBater, The Electric Kisses, The Radio Rockets, the guys and dolls of The Staxx Brothers, Cancer Rising, Michael Kand all of you who keep coming back to get Cherrybombed. Anyway, everyone does one of these lists. Here’s mine, in no particular order.
Fleet Foxes, Mykonos. From the Sun Giant EP, 2008.
Fleet Foxes eponymous June, 2008 release was a smash. For me, every time I hear Mykonos from the Foxes Sun Giant EP, I get the chills. The Fleet Foxes are currently riding high down under in Australia for a series of mostly sold-out shows. Take that Nickelback…
Shame Spiral is Taco Cat’s first record. Put out by the excellent label Don’t Stop Believin’(home toThe Pharmacyand the The Pleasureboaters) the record is really fun and super fuzzy, just like a real Taco Cat. The Garagey goodness of Taco Cat will be touring through March of 2009 including a stop in Austin for SXSW. Way to go Taco Cat.
Coconut Coolouts, (Please Don’t Break Me Out of) Party Jail. From Party Time Machine, 2008.
If you have never seen the Coolouts live, rest assured the band will be rockin’ the shit out of some juke-joint in Seattle really soon. Party Time Machine is a such a solid record it was hard to pick a favorite.
The Bug Nasties, Help Me. From Which Way You Gonna Go, 2008. Photo by Victoria Renard.
Brother James Burdyshaw is the second coming of James Brown. I’m sure of it. If you don’t believe me get to Slim’s on January 16th and tell me I’m wrong.
Nothing is followed closely by the 6:15 second fuck you to commercial radio, Heart’s Abandonded Will Rust. Followed closely by this whole fucking record. Take that Nickelback…
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Today’s Lesson. From Dig Lazarus, DIG!!!. Not the actual vid but it’s all about the song for this song.
Nick Cave’sDIGG!!! is desert island worthy and then some. Lesson is arguably one of the best songs on DIG!!!. The record itself is a must for fans, and the perfect introduction for any Cave nubies. In March, 2009, you can pick up four Cave re-issues with all kinds of sweet extras. Click here for more info.
The Renaissance is Q-Tip’s first record in nine years. In classic Q style, Won’t Trade features sampled vintage vox from Chicago soul chantreuse, Ruby Andrews and her 1969 hit, You Made a Believer (out of me)on Won’t Trade. Word.
Sweet baby Jesus this song sends me. Lay it Down is Al Green’s eighth studio record and it’s stellar from beginning to end. The word legend gets thrown around a lot in the world of music and it’s almost always misused. Except when it comes to The Reverend. Can I get an amen?
Lucinda Williams, Long Way To the Top. From Little Honey, 2008.
When I blogged about this song a while back, I got an email from a very sexy reader who said that the post had pushed this record to the top of their list. And since my readers have very classy ears, you should definitely pick up a copy of Little Honey too.
The world would be a better place with if we had more Quest Love. The Roots 2008 record, Rising Down, is even more in your face than your actual face is.
This remixed single by Bjork featuring Antony of Antony and the Johnsons is addictive. Antony and the Johnsons release, Another World is also well worth squeezing into your 2008 record budget. AATJ tour starts in Feburary with stops in Boston and Seattle on February 28th.
Georgia’s King Khan and the Shrines put out one of the best garage records this year, The Supreme Genius of King Khan and the Shrines. Every time I hear No Regrets, I piss off my neighbors. Which is okay ’cause I hate those guys anyway.
Infomercials have becomebreeding grounds for all kinds of random weirdness. As per standard infomercial protocol, the many benefits of the hearing-aid product, Loud and Clear(above), are discussed. Things get weird about 38 seconds in when the benefits of Loud and Clears hearing aid include eavesdropping on your neighbors. At about 54 the benefits are extended when it’s revealed that Loud and Clear can help you tune in to private conversations at a party. Yikes! Who is behind this product, Karl Rove?
Silver Jews, Sleeping is the Only Love. I could not agree more…
…and since we are speaking of such things as love, I have to confess that Silver Jews“Suffering Jukebox” is my favorite song of the moment. God DAMN that song is so pretty. SJ’s David Berman channels Magnetic Fields’ Stephin Merritt when it comes to the vocals on Jukebox. And GOD DAMN, that is a good thing. Anyway, for sure Cherrybomb knows plenty about suffering jukeboxes. I spent some time on the East Coast and hit the beach bar for a week straight and was forced to listen to all kinds of musical fuckery, like Toby Keith and The Eagles. I kid you not, the same drunk douche would play Hotel California at the same time, every night. That song makes me want to smash things. Like jukeboxes. And that’s just wrong.
The set-list of nearly30 songsfrom this stellar show will make your head spin. Wait’s graced Atlanta’s Fox Theater earlier this month along with guitar god Omar Torrez and his son Casey Waits, on percussion. As of today, you can listen to the entire performance on NPR’s music website.
Thank to the head-spinning greatness of the Mad Irishman for the linkage…
I love Metalocalypse. Two years ago, Metalocalypse, the animated, mostly fictional story about the world’s greatest Metal band, had the highest debut in Adult Swim history. However on Friday night, as I was yet again raiding the choice liquor cabinet of two of Team Cherrybomb’s highest ranking members, I talked up some hip Robot Chicken-watching people who still hadn’t seen Metalocalypse.
This revelation made me think there might be other Metalocalypse virgins out there. Normally, I might kill a virgin over such insolence, but lucky for you (yeah, you), I’m feeling generously full of Belvedere tonight. Which means I’m drunk as hell, and I feel like talking. Besides, blogging is more fun than drunk-dialing your ex on a Saturday night. Unless that 2:00 AM “what are you doin’?” chat gets you laid. In that case, carry the fuck on.
And now, back to the story of Dethklok according to Cherrybomb, already in progress…:
Dethklok is the greatest and most popular Death Metal band in the world. Fans routinely lose limbs, or die at every show they play. An evil Dr. Strangelove-like group called the Tribunal maintains secret control of the band in order to avoid bizarre, apocalyptic-type events, unwittingly caused by the band’s activities. The members of Dethklok are also complete alcoholics.
Dethklok loves Gibsons…doesn’t everybody…?
Dethklok writes songs that reflect every day life, like “Briefcase Full of Guts,” “Kill You,” “Castratikron” and “Face Fisted”. “Fansong” pays homage to the mindless, mutant fans of Dethklok. Brutal…:
Dethklok – Fansong
You hunched and blinded mutants
Living in chat rooms
You masturbate on the sheets
Your mothers clean for you
You have lined my pockets
Overflowed with gold
You’re living with your parents
And you’re 35 years old
Dethklok L2R: William Murderface, brutal bass; Skwisgaar Skwigelf, the world’s fastest guitarist; Nathan Explosion, brutal vox; Pickles the Drummer; Toki Wartooth, the second fastest guitarist in the world…
Metalocalypse is the brainchild of Brendon Small (whose voice is heard on almost every show on Adult Swim), and Tommy Blacha (brilliant writer for Da Ali G Show). The first season of Metalocalypse is out now, on DVD. Highlights from the first season include voice and guitar work from Seattle band Nevermore. Don’t have cable? Check out full episodes of Metalocalypse here.
And I recommend you do. Especially if you like these three things; Metal and blood. And Metal. Look for new episodes of Metalocalypse to premiere on May 18th on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. Season Two re-runs of Metalocalypse start on April 6th.
By the powers of the scrotum of a wizard, and the testicle blood that flows from it, Metalocalypse is the greatest thing to happen to Metal since Kerry King. Take that, Nickelback...
So it’s already that time again. You know, GTFO time. Anyways, Cherrybomb will be DJing a private party overlooking the Space Needle on Friday. I’d invite you, but that wouldn’t make it private party anymore, would it? But don’t despair. There is so much going on this week and this weekend, you won’t miss me. But if you don’t get out, you’ll miss a lot of great shows.
So what are you gonna do? Get The Fuck Out of course…
Thursday, March 13th
Motorhead (!) Stubb’s BBQ (Austin, TX)
Is Motorhead making an appearance at SXSW this week? If you believe the official Motorhead website, the answer is yes. However, Stubb’s website makes no mention of Motorhead on their music calendar. What Stubb’s calendar does say is that the 3/13 bill includes artists like Serge Tankian, Tom Morello and Ben Harper performing songs from the upcoming movie,Body of War. The soundtrack is due out on March 18th. Public Enemy and Eddie Vedder (who performs with Ben Harper on the track “No More”) also contributed to the soundtrack. The film itself will is screening at Sundance on March 13th at 4:00 pm at The Paramount Theater in Austin.
Cherrybomb was at the Rendevoux Room on Saturday night chatting with a bartender about her love for SNB’s Neil of Steel. We then put on the new SNB record really loud, Cherrybomb drank a bunch of Gin then confessed to her lovely bar-mistress that she looked exactly like Kate Hudson, only with boobs. Gin is the best. But it might also be truth serum, so be careful who you drink it with. Anyways, the SNB connection to Seattle Soundbite is that Miss Simona, the hardcore drummer girl for SNB, works at Via Tribunali. To qualify for Soundbite, you must be in a band and also work in a restaurant.
Looking Ahead:
On March 28th, Supernauty, the Seattle Black Sabbath cover band will be at The Blue Moon. Check this vid of Supernauty turning out “Sweet Leaf“. And since I was speaking of SNB earlier in this post, Seattle’s own Miss Simona also plays in an all-girl Black Sabbath tribute band, Mistress of Reality. MOR will play a couple of dates in Calibefore jetting off to Spain for the rest of March.
Shadow – L to R: Mike McCready, Rick Friel and Chris Friel
Flight to Mars Annual CCFA Benefit is back at The Box on May 5th. Feral Children are also on the bill. Best of all, McCready will perform a Hendrix trib that will include local rock ‘n’ brothers, Rick and Chris Friel. Both were in the Seattle hair band, Shadow (see big hair pix above). Rick and Chris also played with McCready in the excellent, The Rockfords with Carrie Akre. I love Rick Friel. He has always had the best hair. And every time I’ve seen him play, he gave it everything he had. Which is a lot. Take notes kids. You might learn something.
Speaking of hair, W.A.S.P is in Australia in April following up their recent US tour dates. Yeah, W.A.S.P is still a band. And codpieces with teeth is the new cowbell. Take that B.O.C.
Dizzee Rascal and EL-P will be at Neumo’s on May 19th. It’s still kind of amazing to me that people seem to be finally catching onto EL-P. His 2007 record, I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead, caught lots of people by surprise. Hopefully, you were one of them. If you’re still saying who?, check out EL-P’s “Up All Night“. The combo of Dizzie and EL-P is unstoppable Hip-Hop. With a British accent. Both Dizzie and EL-P play SXSW at The Scoot Inn on 3/13 with Del the Funky Homosapien.
And finally, The Queers will be at El Corazon on June 1st . Tickets are on sale now.
Man…it’s 12:30 on a Tuesday night. Do you know where your Cherrybomb is? All I can say is if you don’t get out, you’ll never find out. So, GTFO already…
Mark Lanegan and Isobel Campbell (of the stellar Belle and Sebastian) have announced they will play four live gigs in the UK. The super-duo hits London on June 10th at Shepard’s Bush Empire. Their second release, Sunday at Devil Dirtis set for release on May 5th. “Devil Dirt” follows-up to their 2006 record, Ballad of the Broken Seas. Tickets for the London and Manchester gigs are on sale now.

The Hands Record Release Party – Neumo’s 2.29.08 – Photo by Lori Penney
If you read this blog you know that Cherrybomb gets out quite a lot. With that said, this show was one of the best shows I’ve seen in quite a while. The Hands are awesome. Truly, truly awesome. The material from the new self-titled “The Hands” sounded as good live as it does on my iPod. It is officially Cherrybomb’s favorite record so far this year. It doesn’t even start to slow down after the first six tracks. You can pick it up via a paypal link on the bands Myspace. Or, get yourself and your hands to the next Hands show and pick it up from the band directly. If you like Rock and Roll, you will like this record. If you love Rock and Roll like Cherrybomb, you will buy this record and sleep with it. You could also take one of The Hands home with you and sleep with them. I’m sure the band would appreciate your support either way.
The Hands – Neumo’s 2.29.08 – Photo by Cherrybomb
Anyways, all three bands (The Whore Moans and The Earaches shared the bill) came out and strutted hard with their guitars. And for a change, the very large and early crowd really appreciated every band. Which isn’t always the case when you have three or five bands on the same bill. Of course, all three of the bands on this bill are completely excellent so my statement, while true, need not apply to this blog entry or last Friday night at Neumo’s.
The Whore Hands – Neumo’s 2.29.08 – Photo by Lori Penney
If you were at this show, then you also got a taste of The Whore Hands. Okay, everyone knows you shouldn’t put Whore Hands in your mouth but you can definitely put The Whore Hands in your ears. The Whore Hands are TWM and The Hands turning out a bunch of super boss covers at the end of The Hands set. I’m telling you right now, seeing nine of Seattle’s most sweaty and talented musicians on stage spewing out a version of Sabbath’s War Pigs was my favorite moment of the night. Throw in a well worn Stones cover and a couple other vintage nuggets and everyone goes home drunk on rock and roll and happy. I highly recommend you catch the next appearance of The Whore Hands on April 26th at the Wildrose. The Hands and The Whore Moans will both showcase at SXSW next month.
August Henrich of The Earaches – Neumo’s 2.29.08 – Photo by Lori Penney
The Earaches set was the best I’ve seen the band play since last summer. The boys have been giving great garage for ten years now but collectively, their rock and roll roots run much deeper. You got one last chance to catch The Earaches before they leave for a two week tour of the West Coast. The Earaches will play the The Sunset on March 7th with Holy Name Dropouts andBrandon Daniel & Everybody Gets Laid. If you’re doubling up in Vegas, check The Earaches out at Divebar in Vegas on March 15th. Then go play roulette and bet it all on black baby. Black is the color of rock and roll after all. And my black, black heart for that matter, but that’s besides the point.
The Whore Moans – Neumo’s 2.29.08 – Photo by Cherrybomb
The Whore Moans were at the top of their game on Friday. Cherrybomb has seen TWM many times and without a doubt, this was the best I’ve ever seen them. Their set was so hot I thought Ryan was going to burst into flames. But, lucky for Ryan and his sweet Genesis shirt, bursting into flames on stage is reserved for drummers.
The Whore Moans – Neumo’s 2.29.08 – Photo by Cherrybomb
Cherrybomb will be checking out The Gutter Twins show tomorrow, Tuesday, March 4th. If you can’t make it to the show, TGT will be live on KEXP at 1:00 pm PST tomorrow. If I’m lucky (and I verra often am) I might try get close enough to Greg Dulli to see if he really tastes like Dunhills and expensive Whiskey. Who am I kidding….that’s what I taste like. Besides, I never try anything…
I have to say I feel obligated to tell you when I see a great music video, since I’m pretty sure it’s nearly impossible to see any videos these days. Anyways, Muse’s, Knights of Cydonia, has everything you need to make a great video. Guitars, a hot blonde chick, Robots, a guy that looks like Clint Eastwood, guns that fire lasers, Cowboys, a guy that looks like Freddy Mercury, Motorcycles and a Unicorn.
I don’t know about you, but my ears and liver are still recovering from Mos Generator and the DT’s last Friday. Wonder Woman is on her way to Colorado to fight injustice but before she left, WW gave all her records (around 200) to Cherrybomb. It’s like heavy metal Christmas in Cherrybomb’s house right now. My turntable is hot and I got the Aqua Net pink can out. Spandex might also be involved but you’ll never know. Anyways, one of the best things to happen to Seattle in a while, the King Cobra has got some of the best bills in the city this weekend and into March. Now get ready to flash your devil signs and Get The Fuck Out…
I love The Hands. Every time I hear something off this new record I get sticky fingers. I mean, listen to Sticky Fingers. Wow, that was an awkward silence. And while I know I’m not the first person to make this comparison, but it’s inescapable. Anyways, Cherrybomb wouldn’t miss this show for anything. Which means you shouldn’t either. Got it?
March 7th, Slim Cessna’s Auto Club will be at The Showbox In The Lounge. SCAC new record Cipher comes out on Alternative Tentacles, March 25th. On Saturday, March 8th, The Detroit Cobras and The Blakes will be at The High Dive. If I have to tell you this is one sweet bill, you know nothing about music. And since I started this post telling you King Cobra it taking over Seattle, here is more proof. KC will hold the first installment of monthly benefit shows for Music Cares on March 20th with The Cops, North Twin and Sunday Night Blackout. The Cobra twist on this one is all the bands are covering Thin Lizzy. For the love of Gary Moore the King Cobra is throwing down the gauntlet of boozy, musical excellence. Other clubs might take a hint…
Metal Goddess Doro Pesch and Warlock. Triumph and Agony – pure 1987…
Doro Pesch will be at Studio 7 on April 4th. Doro is a living legend like Lemmy only way better looking in leather. Doro used to front the band Warlock. And if you just yelled “WARLOCK!” then you already have tickets for this show…
The Sword – Gods of the Earth out April 8th
The Swordwill be at Neumo’s on Tuesday, April 22nd. Gods of the Earth is due out in early April but you can get the import now here. On Thursday, April 24th, Simian Mobile Disco will bring a truck load of turntables and some heavy beats to Neumo’s
Mick Jones of The Clash, Big Audio Dynamite and Carbon/Silicon
Hey London, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds will be performing live at HMV, 150 Oxford Street, on Monday 3rd March at 6.00pm. The band will then stick around to sign copies of DIG!!!. Access to the signing will be limited to 300 people and you’re gonna need a wristband for it. You can get a wristband starting at 9:00 am on March 3rd.
And as of today (according to the official Nick Cave site), you can listen to all of DIG!!! on the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds Myspace page. It doesn’t appear to be up yet but keep checking back.
Wonder Woman temporarily replaces Wendy O. Evildoers beware!
Dang. It feels like it was just a weekend, and now it’s practically the weekend again. Just the way I likes it. This weekend, Team Cherrybomb will be out in force on Friday. It’s a special and sad night for us as one of our own is moving to Colorado. Which, by all accounts, is a very nice place to be going off to. I mean, there’s the mountains, the clean air, the running into Robert Redford at Starbucks. I mean, it’s practically Seattle. Except in Seattle you run into Mark Arm at an out-of-the-way coffee shop that isn’t Starbucks. I’m gonna miss you, Wonder Woman. I can’t wait to kick Seattle’s ass with you one more time.
Now, where should you be this weekend, and beyond? Let me check your crystal balls and see…
Editor’s Note: Cherrybomb has no balls of her own. But if she did, they would be made of diamonds, not some cheap-ass Mikasa crystal. Also, I am repeating some stuff from last week because it bears repeating. Not ’cause I forgot…Also, I am repeating some stuff from last week because it bears repeating. Take that, brain cell.
Wednesday, February 20th:
Rock ‘n’ Roll Soldiers just got their hair did. Don’t mess with it…
Don’t I wish I was telling you RnR Soldiers were right here in Seattle tonight. However, we must be happy for our Oregon friends, as this is the second night of their ‘08 European tour. The band has already hit Spain and Paris, and by all reports, both locations are still mostly standing. The excellent So Many Musicians to Kill would improve even the most worthy record collection. Favorite RNRS verse? You say you love me, but I’ll make you hate me. You say you love me, but I don’t give a fuck about you. Straight and to the point. Just how I likes it…
Friday, February 22nd:
The DT’s
Mos Generator
@The Funhouse
If you miss this show, get to Bellingham on Saturday, March 29th, and catch The DT’s with Black Eyes and Neckties and Skullbotat the Rogue Hero. Cherrybomb wouldn’t miss this show, though. Especially since the clown on the flier for this show told me not too miss it. And I always do everything the clowns tell me to do.
Monotonix is like Gogol Bordello doing 110 down the highway with a tail light out, and a trunk full of nitrus. Black Eyes (or BENt) played live on KEXP last week, and the on-air performance broke my radio and my eardrums. Monotonix will invade Denver, CO on March 10th at Rhinoceropolis.

The Cool School Northwest Film Forum
The Cool School is a trip back to the 1950’s art beat scene in LA. It includes interviews with Dennis Hopper and Frank Gehry, and focuses on the Ferus Gallery in LA, which held the very first Andy Warhol show. I think NWFF sums it up best here:
The Cool School is a vivid picture of the inspiring scene and shares the untold story of a group of scrappy artists that shook up the dull tastemakers, got arrested for obscenity, and ultimately established the importance of West Coast art.
The Cool School runs through Thursday, February 28th. And since I’m on the topic of Art, I was horribly remiss in not mentioning the opening of “A Cabinet Of Natural Curiosities” at the Roq La Rue on February 8th. While the gallery at The Roc will feature animals and other interpretations of living creatures, I love this piece by one of the shows featured artists, Lisa Petrucci (below)
The wood art of Lisa Petrucci is sweet. And let’s face it. You haven’t really lived unless you have seen a painting of a naked woman on a piece of wood. The show also includes the macabre and prolific works of LA’s Liz McGrath. To further stick it to you that girls can do it all, McGrath’s band, Miss Derringer, just finished up a ten-stop tour of the West Coast.
Saturday, February 23rd:
Dita Vox of Thee Emergency at The Funhouse. Photo by Cherrybomb.
Holy Hellgate. This show is right on, so Dig It. This show is so good, it’s gonna bring Cherrybomb to The Comet two nights in a row. Take that, liver. And in keeping with the Colorado theme for this post, Thee Emergency will be at The Rocket Room in CO on March 21st.
Looking Ahead:
The Supersuckers got stars and guitars…
The Supersuckerswill play five shows around Colorado starting on March 1st. What a way to welcome a girl to town. The Supersuckers have got to be one of the hardest working bands in the world. Ed Spaghetti and crew played 139 shows last year.
Gary Louris will be at the Showbox on March 16th. Louris is the vocalist for one of the best bands you maybe never heard of, The Jayhawks (listen to Rainy Day Music. It’s excellent even if you don’t live in Seattle). Although I’m not sure what kind of hellish afterlife you live in that doesn’t involve The Jayhawks, I’m sure it’s horribly bland and flavorless.
Pete Way back in the day…
UFO will be at El Corazon on May 7th. This is one of the many shows re-scheduled from The Croc. It features the original lineup, which includes Pete Way – the Bass Master of UFO, Waysted (who are touring now) and Fastway – clearly one of the greatest metal bands ever. At least that last point is verra clear to Cherrybomb. Not to digress, but check this vid from Waysted, “Heaven Tonight“. That spider-web never had a chance.
I would like to end on a Cheap Trick note. Because who doesn’t like a happy ending? I adore Cheap Trick. Every time I see them, I feel like those girls who used to faint in the front row of a Beatles show. Anyways, designer John Varvatos used CT for his latest ad campaign. And it’s awesome. But seriously, is it me, or does Robin Zander just not age like the rest of us? Anyways, Cheap Trick will be live at Budokan again on April 24th.
Soul Train + James Brown – Don Cornelius = Future Shock
Good God y’all. I feel so funky after watching Future Shock, I jumped back and kissed myself. And not for anything, it was great. Thanks for wondering about that. Then I gave thanks to the greatness that is KFMU (91.1 in New York) for hipping me to James Brown’s short lived television show, Future Shock. Or Soul Train on Crack Cocaine as KFMU’s excellent blog calls it. This footage is unreal. I saw at least ten Pam Griers and one Bootsy. Brown’s sweet cop ’stache is awesome. How this show didn’t last is beyond me. Wait…no it isn’t. Anyways, get down with the man who taught them everything they know, but not everything he knew.
Wendy proves all Rock really needs is tape, a guitar and a microphone…
Screw working for the weekend. And Loverboy for that matter. And Valentine’s Day. And Mike Reno. As a matter of fact, fuck Mike Reno and his headband. If I had a dollar for every time I heard “Hot Girls in Love” on the Himalaya at the traveling summertime carnie I would be like, 17. I mean rich. Now on to getting out…
Valentines Day, Thursday, February 14th:
The Cops
The Femurs
Ms. Led
C’mon C’mon
This bill if full of niceness. If you believe me, at least check out this podcast from The Cops and turn up the speakers. Then you will believe me and that’s what counts. That you are wrong and I am right. Every time.
Steve T. McQueen is Bullitt. The T is for Tuff…
Bullitt
Cool Hand Luke Northwest Film Forum
35mm showings of two amazing movies staring two of the coolest men to ever grace the screen. Who would win in a Newman vs. McQueen throw down? Cherrybomb says it’s all about McQueen. In fact, every movie should star Steve McQueen and have at least one 11 minute car chase involving at least one hot, ‘68Mustang. The End.
From the North
Grayskul High Dive – FREE
There is no excuse to miss this show. Shawn Smith released like 100 records already in 2008. And it’s only February mind you. Okay, Shawn only released three records so far in 2008 but that’s like more than most bands release in a year so take that Nickleback. Add Grayskul and you got a free throw down worth way more than the asking price.
The Comet
Hot damn this is one sweet bill. A very handsome and rocksure friend of Cherrybomb’s said The Foxgloves had the same consistency of Super Sugar Smacks. And I’m thinking that’s crunchy and sweet but won’t rot your teeth. Anyways, if you can’t make this show you can catch The Whore Moans, The Earachesand The Hands at The Hands record release on Friday, February 29th at Neumo’s. Getting drunk somewhere else that night? Okay, The Hands will play live at noon (PST) on KEXP on Tuesday, February 19th. Stream that baby. Going to Canada to house hunting because you plan to relocate there sometime at the end of the year? The Paper Dolls will be at Pub 340 in Vancouver, BC on March 14. Phew…
The Funhouse The DT’s will be at The Funhouse on Friday, February 22nd. The DT’s don’t get to Seattle enough for me and that’s mostly because they love to rock the shit out of their hometown Bellingham, Washington. And when the DT’s aren’t in Bellingham, they are probably being adored by their fans in Spain. Get out and seem ‘em while you can. Your face will thank you later. Mos Generatoris also on the bill.
Plaster has lots of guitars…
Plaster
Book of Black Earth
I know I say “no way are you missing this show” a lot, but MAN, no way are you missing this show. Anyways, the King Cobra has been open for a few weeks and I’m ashamed to admit I haven’t hit it yet. Thankfully, the power of Plaster and BOFE compel my evil ways to the King Cobra on February 28th.
Orange Sunshine from somewhere in the Hague
On Saturday, March 8th Lesbian, Mos Generator and Orange Sunshine (from the Netherlands) will be at The Comet. Whoa. Orange Sunshine is playing Seattle. April 5th will bring Seattle Metal Fest and Studio 7 together for lots of loud, sweaty, godless, loudness. Sweet, sweet sweaty loudness.
Beth Ditto of The Gossip
The Gossip will be in London on March 21st, wrapping up a six stop tour that included dates around France. A live DVD/Record two-fer called “Live in Liverpool” will be out soon on.
Southern Culture on the Skids…looks pretty good to me.
And finally, it must be that time of year again ’cause the SCOTS are back in Seattle on April 18th and 19th at The Tractor. Not that the SCOTS play Seattle every April but it seems that when the SCOTS blow into town, the sun comes out and the air is filled with the sound of Telecasters.
I have Sleazegrinder to thank for so many things and getting hip to Ash is one of them. Anyways, the great and powerful Ash (watch the vid for “Clones”, above with the speakers all the way up) just announced they will play a gig at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn on Monday, March, 17th. Another name for March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day. Which officially makes Brooklyn, NY the best place to spend this coming St. Patrick’s Day. Damn you New York! Why are you so far away from Seattle. Ash and Nick Cave (who performs at the Plug Awards on March 6th) all in one month? No fair.
This Mashup is so good I had to post it. I think DJ Zebra did this one of NIN’s “Closer” and The Beatles “Come Together“. Cherrybomb compels you to check it…
In other news, I’m thinking we should all try considering Monday atonement for what we did over the weekend. I’m only trying to take the obvious sting of Monday away for you as I’m sure it hurts. Me? I sleep in Monday through Friday so my pleas are based on popular opinion. Okay…I sleep in Monday through Sunday but dang…it isn’t my fault you have a job to go to tomorrow. But still, don’t be sad, uh…I mean…okay. You have every right to be sad, but trust me. It’s gonna be Friday again real soon. And I base that statement on my own personal experience with Friday. And that’s what counts. Friday makes life worth living. I’m totally sure. Thank you Friday. Sweet, sweet Friday. I love you more each time we meet.
…is the day we should all start drinking heavily, straight through ’til November. And mostly, you should go somewhere other than your couch to do it. Unless that couch is getting you laid. If that is in fact the case, carry the fuck on. All curse words aside, I’m completely confused about how to misuse my vote. I filled out my absentee ballot and then ripped it up. Anyways, lets get back to talking about what’s really important. Rock and Roll, baby…and we’re off:
Thursday, February 7th:
Ms. Led has got the right idea…
Ms. Led Pris The Sunset Ms. Led tells it like it is. Their music is angry and urgent with lyrics that will shake you awake. If they don’t, then you, sir, are dead.
Hobo Libido Club Fuel HL has a new track up on their Myspace site called “Love Cow“. Ding dang it’s pretty sweet. And it has cowbell in it, just as a song called Love Cow should. The beginning of the song made me think of both Thin Lizzy and Mountain at the same time. Which under normal circumstances, would have made that 70’s side of my brain explode. Fortunately, normal circumstances and Cherrybomb rarely intersect on the road of rock and roll. Phew…
Friday, February 8th:
No Fi Soul Rebellion like apples…
Cancer Rising No Fi Soul Rebellion Comet Tavern No Fi is yet another band putting Bellingham, Washington on the map. And whoever is booking Cancer Rising is a fucking genius. And no, it’s not me, but I can totally see how you might have thought it might have been.
Saturday, February 9th:
Ellen Forney Book Launch & Art Exhibition
Fantagraphics (Georgetown location) Forney’s work is known to you if you read The Stranger. The back of The Stranger mostly. Don’t act like you don’t read The Stranger back pages. Everyone reads those back pages. Okay, everyone for sure LOOKS at the back pages. Sticky back pages. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you…TS Tina called for you when you were out. In other super art girl news, lens-mistress Lilly Warner is showing her photos of Seattle’s own SSP at the Cafe Venus and Mars Bar through February 29th.
Shim (and Dita Vox’s Mohawk). Photo by Cherrybombed.
Shim (CD Release) Tractor Tavern Shim’s follow-up to the sweet release In the Veins, “Feel Like a King” is out tonight. The last time I saw Shim, I loved them as much as the first time I saw them. Bring earplugs and your love for dry ice.
OVO is Italian for hardcore…
Lesbian OvO (Italy)
Vera Project Lesbian and OvO on a Saturday night? Okay, to be fair, OvO is from Italy and sounds like something from a Dario Argento movie, so maybe you never heard of ‘em. I’ll let you slide this one time, but next time, man…knuckle Lesbian sandwich for you.
Looking Ahead…:
Rufus Wainwright will be at The Paramount on March 13th. I’m ashamed to say I was only slightly aware of Rufus until recently. If you are Rufus ignorant like Cherrybomb see the Leonard Cohen doc, “I’m Your Man”. The doc’s approach is a little unconventional but the performances (that include the likes of Nick Cave and Beth Orton) are completely stellar. Wainwright’s version of Cohen’s “Hallelujah” will make you a fan if you aren’t one already.
Jamie Nova of Hell’s Belles and Witchburn
Ministry is at The Showbox on March 29th. I lost my shoes at a Ministry show once. I never liked those shoes anyway but I still love Ministry. I like my rock hard and fast or I want no rock at ALL. Hell’s Belles has two shows on February 23rd at Hell’s Kitchen in Tacoma. All ages at 3:00 (!) and 21+ at 9:00. Vocalist Jamie Nova’s other band, Witchburn (who are so excellent) will be at El Corazon on Wednesday, February 13th.
Cherrybombed.com is about the music and culture of the Pacific Northwest, as well as other cool happenings around the world. We also shine a spotlight on celebrities behaving badly. Here, you will find videos, low-brow artwork and images, and tattoos only a mother could hate.
If boozing was an olympic event, we would be on a box of Wheaties. If this all sounds familiar to you (and your mother), welcome home.
