The Iconography of Masks, a show curated by London based artist Jason Atomic , opens on July 30th at The Resistance Gallery in London. Masks will feature everything from from fetish hoods to death masks, created by artists and collectives like Suckadelic and Bigfoot, as well as new mask related paintings by Atomic himself.
My Rock ‘n’ Roll 1/2 Marathon Medal. Thanks to Wonder Woman for running with me and on her personal 1/2 marathon record yesterday. You are my hero.
Yesterday, I ran my first 1/2 marathon in the inaugural Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon in Seattle. I finished in just over three hours. Though many predicted otherwise (including myself at times), I didn’t die. My apologies to those of you that will have to wait a little longer to divvy up my record collection. Anyway, here are some of the highlights from my early morning jaunt from Tukwila to Seattle yesterday.
The Michael Jackson Shrine between miles 4 and 5. Complete with a boom box blaring MJ and the chick with the sweet Afro busting a move with MJ’s photo in her hands.
The field was comprised primarily of chicks. 70% to be precise. Proving once again that girls rule!
Stopping briefly to check out the Grynch around mile 10.
I got a medal (see above. Seriously, it’s really mine)! And it wasn’t for drinking someone under the table. That’s next weekend.
The KISS cheerleaders bringing me home at mile 13.
Sprinting to the finish line!
The Cheetos I got to eat after passing on the “thanks but no thanks” complimentary MGD in the recovery area. Mmmmm, forbidden Cheetos…
Thanks to everyone that called and wrote to wish me well on Saturday. I’ll be back to regular posts tomorrow. Stay tuned…
The very sexy Tommy One Time sent me this show poster for his June 5th gig with his band The McInros. It’s fantastic, don’t you think? Anyway, the very metal McInros will be at the brand new (so new I don’t have the addy yet)Mesa’s Cuisine in Capitol Hill. Get out and support the local, local yo…
A freaky flick by a talented acquaintance of mine, Antony De Gennaro, will make it’s STIFF debut on June 9th. Son of Terror was four years in the making and De Gennaro’s dedication to his craft has yielded dizzying and demented results. I saw SOT when De Gennaro first screened as a fundraiser at the Rendevoux Room last year and I’m happy to report it’s a nightmarish bit of celluloid. And, like all good horror films, it’s not above making you to laugh at the most inappropriate moment.
If you’re also enjoying a sunny Staycation in Seattle this weekend, head down to Folklife this afternoon to check out the Ska Showcase featuring Natalie Wouldn’t, The Diablotones, and the rude boy, punk infused pirates from Portland, Rum Rebellion.
Folklife(admission is Free!) opens up at 11:00 am. The Ska Showcase kicks off at 3:00 pm.
In addition to a see and sign by LA’s The Pizz, local artistJim Blanchard will have five pieces in this one-day-only Lowbrow Art Show at Slim’s Last Chance in Georgetown on Saturday. Oregon’s Los Mex Pistols and Seattle’s‘63 Burnoutwill both play live sets. All indicators point to cool on this one. Be there.
The Coloffs @ The Funhouse, May 2nd, 2009. Photo by Lori Penney.
One email I got after The Funhouse show last Saturday, summed the night up perfectly. The author said that the performances made him “feel proud” of Seattle. And to that statement I bid a healthy “fuck yeah”.
The Coloffs(above) closed the night like the titans they are. When they hit the stage, there was an exhilarating rush to the front of the stage. It’s a week later, my ears have not stopped ringing, and I was wearing earplugs. Queue Joan Jett in five, four, three, two…
Radio Rockets @ The Funhouse on May 2nd, 2009. Photo by Lori Penney.
Radio Rockets were loud, sweaty and tight. It was a total thrill to hear Henrich’s garagey rock drawl again. If you were/are a fan of The Earaches, then you and your classy ears will dig Radio Rockets revved up Replacements-esque noise.
Movie Star Junkies @ The Funhouse. May 2nd, 2009. Photo by Lori Penney.
Italy’s Movie Star Junkies look like they are three men (or women) short of a spaghetti western and sound like Gogol Bordello spewing from a speeding car. If anybody ever tells you that Italians with tambourines, keyboards and guitars can’t be punk rock, that person is full of shit.
Many thanks once again to the very metal electric eye of Lori Penney for the photos. You are my hero.
Tomorrow night, the good sisters and brothers from the Staxx Brothers will be celebrating the release of their new record,We are The Blaxstonzat Nectar Lounge. It’s a great room for a big band like Staxx as they will easily fill every inch of Nectar with their soulful, hip-hop rawk. Ghettotech experts, Mad Rad are also on the bill.
To check out more from Seattle’s StaxxBrothers, click here.
Cherrybombed.com will probably be pretty quiet tomorrow as I’ll be out at The Funhouse tonight celebrating the return of former Earache vocalist August Henrich and his new band,Radio Rockets. The raw, exotic sailor trash of Italy’s Movie Star Junkies and local band The Coloffsalso share this, bring your fucking earplugs, bill. See you there…
T-Model Ford is a bad man. Which makes for really great Blues music…
T- Model Ford is the real deal. A true, Delta blues man with a troubled past, a couple of ex-wives and a criminal record. T-Model is 75 years old and just played SXSW. Do not miss this show.
For more on T-Model check out the website for one of my favorite labels, Fat Possum Records. Fat Possum is also home to the lush sounds of another lesser known Mississippi native, Junior Kimborough.
Here’s looking at you Cherrybomb. Phosphorescent at Nectar Loung in Seattle, March 10th, 2009. Photo by Cherrybomb.
For a man who professes to live on watermelon and beer, Matthew Houck, or Phosphorescence, is doing pretty well. Last night at Nectar Lounge in Fremont, Houck and his current touring band masterfully worked their way through an emotional and at times exuberant, set of music. Phosphorescence guitarist Jesse Anderson Ainslie frenetic solos were an unexpected highlight. Second only to Ainslie’s uncanny resemblance to Tommy Chong.
Phosphorescence live at Nectar Lounge in Seattle, March 10th, 2009. Photo by Cherrybombed.
You can catch Phosphorescence at Holocene in Portland tonight. And I mean that in the nicest possible “do not miss this show” kind of way. For more Phosphorescence tour dates, click here.
Members of Seattle’s The Staxx Brothers, hard at work on their new record. Knowledge is POWER yo…
My favorite West Coast Soul Strutters, The Staxx Brothers(and sisters, represent!) are currently in the studio with Scott Colburn(think Mudhoney, Arcade Fire and Animal Collective) working on their new record, due out on May 8th. You can catch TSB at Nectar Lounge tomorrow night opening for N.A.S.A.. N.A.S.A. is out supporting their 2009 album, Spirit of Apollo. Apollo features collab’s with everyone from Tom Wait’s to Chuck D.. Both bands will then head to Austin to play at SXSW.
Sorry, I know this has been all over the Internets already but, I can’t get enough. It just screams, fuck yeah. Anyway, on to the point of this post. Which is what you should do this weekend now that we live in a Bushless society. There are so many shows going on your biggest problem is truly which ones to hit. Although, you can’t miss Ms. Led tonight, it’s the band last show ever so Friday is easy. Saturday is going to be a tough call for all of you with classy ears. Unless you’re in London because then it’s all about T Rextasy. Okay, enough jibba-jabba, let’s go…!
The Knast,Apache The Funhouse
A verra good looking friend of mine said that despite the high hairspray content of this bill at The Funhouse, she wouldn’t miss Apache(from San Fransisco) and The Knast for all the Aqua Net Pink Can in the world. Now that’s love.
T Rextacy(T Rex Tribute)
The Brook (Southhampton, England) T Rextacy’s Electric Boogie Tour kicks off on January 31st and will get it on all around the UK through April of 2009. Do you hear me Jane?
Vince Neil
Dr. Feelgoods (West Palm Beach Florida) Dr. Feelgoods is Neil’s WPB club. This gig is free! I’d say Vince Neil has to eat too but Vince isn’t paying himself for this gig.
The Bloodies will be in Portland, OR at Plan B on January 30th. On January 31st,Sharon Jones and theDap Kings will be back in Seattle at the Showbox at the Market. I keep catching Jones’ performance on Austin City Limits and am unable to tear myself away every time that woman opens her mouth. On February 15, The Gutter Twins, otherwise known as Mark Lanegan and Greg Dulli will be at the Showbox at the Market along with Happy Chichester(!) and the awesomeness that isShawn Smith. Finally, Elivs Perkins will be at The Tractor on March 9th. I’m really digging Perkins new self-titled record, Elvis Perkins in Dearland. Perkins’ melodies and vocals are almost as dreamy as the man himself. Despite the fact that Perkins is the son of actor Anthony Perkins, the star of Psycho.True story.
GTFO will be two things I am not this week. Short and sweet. No time for links!
Friday, January 9th:
John Spaulding Benefit with The Cave Singers, Rocky Voltolato, Triumph of Lethargy, Skinned Alive to Death Showbox at the Market
The Whore Moans, Thee Emergency Vera
Ray Manzarek The Triple Door
All ages. Second show on Saturday

Roy Kay Trio Elvis Birthday Tribute (!) Connor Byrne
Even though Elvis was born on January 8th, it’s never too late to pay tribute to the King…
Saturday, January 10:
Thee Emergency, Wild Orchid Children High Dive
Team Cherrybomb will be out in full force for this gig. The Top Shelf will perish. It will be a good night.
The Dutchess and the Duke The Tractor
Boss Martians The Funhouse
The Dwarves and Zeke El Corazon
I had to dig my only Dwarves record out for this entry. I really was a metal head. Sweet.
Happy Holidays? Has there ever been a more misguided use of the word “happy”? Probably not. Anyway, if you’re like me, you’ve been drinking yourself awake and asleep for the last few days. So in essence, the Holidays are just like every other day of the year. I don’t know about you, but my house has been pretty much a drunker version of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. My tree has so far survived which is more than I can say for myself. In the words of the very excellent Schoolyard Heroes, this is what it’s like to be Home for the Horrordays.
So, if you’re like me, you NEED to Get The Fuck Out and get drunk with complete strangers that won’t tell you what a drunken ass you were the next morning as they eat all the food in your fridge. Now, let’s GTFO…
Friday, December 26th:
Coconut Nativity complete with Baby Jesus coconut. For CF.
The other amatuer night also known as New Year’s Eve is quickly approaching. If you’re like me (and you verra well might be) you still haven’t decided where you will be getting drunk and hitting on your second-cousin yet. Don’t worry, I’ve got your back. First, the fantastic funk ‘n’ soul otherwise known as The Staxx Brothers will be at The Tractor Tavern. Rather rock while you’re getting crocked? Shim will be at the Sunset, Neon Nights will be at The King Cobra and A Gun That Shoots Kniveswill be at The Blue Moon. If you prefer chicken-wire to go with your beer, Highway 99 is hosting Hayride to Hell with Ruby Dee & the Snakehandlers and Purdy Mouth. I’m also happy to report thatthe Radio Nationals are again a band and will play their first gig in over a year at the High Dive on NYE. The Dusty 45’sshare this sweet, sweet bill ensuring that this show will be as hot as Billy Joe’s horn. There’s also no shortage of big shows with DeVotchKa at the Showbox/Market,POT USA(with Monotonixand Vince Mira with the RK Trio) will be at The Paramount and Ghostland Observatory comes back to Seattle to celebrate New Years Eve at Showbox SoDo.
This week I thought I would highlight some of the shows happening this weekend that are also raising money for charity. Getting the fuck out, rockin’ out, getting drunk and making a difference? Priceless.
Friday, December 12th:
All hail the King. Bruce Campbell is in Seattle tonight.
My Name is Bruce The Varsity Bruce Campbell (!) directs and stars in his new movie, My Name is Bruce. Campbell himself will introduce Bruce tonight in Seattle, as well as hold a Q&A following the 7:00pm showing. What would you ask Bruce? I’ve decided that I will ask him what kind of music he likes to listen to when he’s killin’ Zombies with his boom stick. I figured asking Bruce if anyone had ever asked to call his boom stick a boom stick during sex might not go over too well. Of course, the wild card here is if I am drunk enough (and I verra well will be) I will ask the boom stick question. Speaking of movies, Fast Times at Ridgemont High is the midnight show at the Egyptian tonight and Saturday. Boom Stick!
Piston Packin’ Momas XMas Bash Motor
This show will benefit the Homeless Animal Rescue.
KISS Kids by Ron English.
KISS Army and Madman Diaries
Cardos (Chillicothe, OH)
A KISS trib and an Ozzy trib on the same bill. Finally, there is something to do on a Friday night in Chillicothe, OH. Well, sort of.
The Whore Moans at Neumo’s. Photo by Cherrybomb.
The Whore Moans Chop Suey
A very good looking friend of mine asked me, “Will it be Whores or Hands for you tonight”. Well, what’s it gonna be punk? TWM new record, Hello From Radio Wasteland, somehow captures the energy of a live TWM show. I no longer need caffeine to wake up in the morning. Not that I actually wake up in the morning or anything. But if I did, all I would need is this record.
The Hands The Comet Will it be Hands or Whores for you tonight?, is my new favorite phrase. It works on so many levels. For instance, if someone asks you if you are free next Saturday night, you would simply say, “Sure! Will it be Hands or Whores?”. Or, when your so-called “friend” asks you if you have that $50 you owe stole from him, you can easily squirm out of not giving it to him by saying, “Will it be Hands or Whores for you tonight?”. I guarantee he will forget all about that money because he will spend the rest of the day trying to figure out what the fuck you are talking about. It’s perfect.
Saturday, December 13th:
The Real Me, WASP. Any time I can blog about WASP I will. Take that Nickelback.
Quadrophenia Cover Night The Tractor
Bands like Thee Stg. Major III, Kim Virant and the Tripwires will be covering The Who’s Quadrophenia in it’s entirety. Proceeds from this show benefit Musicares.
The Plasmatics, Goin’ Wild. Which is exactly what you should be doing this weekend…
After a short hiatus freak-out, GTFO it back. And that’s good because this month is full of much GTFO worthy stuff that you should know about. Anyway, I know first hand how tough things are right now. And that means getting out to a club to see a band or a show might be more of a financial challenge than it used to be. Just try to remember that local businesses like, your favorite watering hole, need you more than ever these days. The same goes for your favorite local bands and artists. Supporting them especially during tough times, is the only way to ensure that they will still be there tomorrow. Sadly, just as I was getting ready to publish this entry, I was told that The Cops are calling it quits after their show on December 19th at The Sunset. So get together with your rock-minded friends, maybe share a ride or drink a little less (your liver will thank you) and put that cash toward a CD or other band merch. Anyway, I’ll get off my burning pulpit now so you can get on with Getting The Fuck Out…
Friday, December 5th:
Lyrics Born, I like it, I love it. Maybe the wackiest video ever.
The Staxx Brothers. Live from The Zombie Prom, 2008. Dang that Cop can blow…
The Staxx Brothers
The Arts Club (Vancouver, B.C.)
Can’t make it to B.C.? Catch the sweet, funky soul of The Staxx Brothers at The Jet Bar in Mill Creek on Saturday, December 6th.
Black Eyes and Neckties, Helms Alee The Comet Helms Alee did an in-studio earlier this week on KEXP. It was completely amazing. I can’t recommend this bill enough. Don’t forget to bring earplugs.
Tesla, Edison’s Medicine, 1991. For Surly and LP.
Tesla
The Joint (The Hard Rock Hotel, Las Vegas)
Last month, Tesla, Queensryche and a Sebastian Bachless Skid Row all took to the high seas to rock out with their fans. Some as paid as much as $2,100 for a VIP room with a balcony. It seems that the current recession has had absolutely no affect on the Metal community. Phew.
Saturday, December 6th:
Kowloon Bit Saloon
A young Sleazegrinder and I used to get dragged to the Kowloon in Saugus, Massachusetts(due to a technical issue with Flash V10 I can’t post a photo of the Kow but you can click the link above to see it in all it’s satanic majesty) more often than we would have liked. True story.
Cherrybombed.com is about the music and culture of the Pacific Northwest, as well as other cool happenings around the world. We also shine a spotlight on celebrities behaving badly. Here, you will find videos, low-brow artwork and images, and tattoos only a mother could hate.
If boozing was an olympic event, we would be on a box of Wheaties. If this all sounds familiar to you (and your mother), welcome home.
