Incredibly sad news today that the legendary leader of the Velvet Underground, Lou Reed, has passed away. He was 71. Back in June Reed’s wife Lauri Anderson said that he was “dying”, and Reed had a successful liver transplant that saved his life. But she also added that she didn’t think that Reed would “ever totally recover from it”. And sadly, Anderson was right. Reed’s contributions and influence in the world of rock and roll were huge and far reaching beyond his own generation, and the void his passing leaves is vast.
According to one of my closest friends, “Velvet Underground saved his life“. And for that, and many other reasons, I’ll always be grateful for Lou Reed.
Rest in peace, sweet satellite. You will be missed.
