Nick Cave: “I’m Not A Fucking Cowboy”

This is Nick Cave’s happy face.

Recently, the king of cool, Nick Cave, dropped by Marc Maron’s WTF podcast for an hour-long chat with the comedian. And, much like Cave’s uncomfortable at best Twitter Q&A in February, it’s didn’t start off so well. Which isn’t really surprising as prior to the interview, Maron confessed that he didn’t “have any experience of Nick Cave”, “didn’t know him personally”, and he also hadn’t had the chance to listen to “other interviews” with the legendary Aussie, who is notoriously morose, and easily pissed off during such events.

In fact, one of the most cringe-worthy Cave moments I’ve ever experienced was during an interview he did with KEXP DJ, the deeply respected Cheryl Waters, back in 2008. Cave, who is not a fan of technology (a sentiment that is also echoed during his interview with Maron), was in an especially cantankerous mood that day. During a break in the Bad Seeds‘ in-studio performance, Waters’ asked if Cave was connected to the “modern world of computers and the internet”. Cave responded by asking if the interview “was live”, then went on to say that if it wasn’t, that it might be best to  “go back and edit out that last question.” The interview is a thing of legend in Seattle’s music scene, and apparently Cave, perhaps in a moment of regret, invited Waters’ back to his hotel room later that day to “finish” the interview. Something the DJ politely declined. Smart girl.

Now, on to Marc Maron’s uncomfortable Cave moment. In a likely attempt t0 pay Cave a compliment, as well as sum up his 30+ year career, Maron referred to Cave as a “tormented cowboy of sorts”. To which Cave unsurprisingly, and menacingly responds, “I’m not a fucking cowboy”. Yikes.

Luckily for Maron, he’s able to recover and gets Cave to spill his punk rock guts about all kinds of stuff like his early Birthday Party days, drugs, meeting Johnny Cash, and his coming-of-age with the help of Barbara Eden.

You can listen to the whole interview over at Maron’s WTF website.
