Rock ‘n’ Roll Flashback: Bullet LaVolta…

Bullet LaVolta. Spin photoshoot, 1991.
After listening to Mother Love Bone all week last week, I was determined to find my copy of Swandive from Boston band, Bullet LaVolta. Despite their geographical proximity to the West Coast, Bullet LaVolta also possessed that sweet, gutter-fuzz sound that would soon be attributed to Seattle. Kevin Kerslake stepped up to direct the bands 1991 breakthrough video, Swandive. Kerslake then went on to direct videos for Soundgarden (Loud Love, Hands All Over) as well as a slew of videos for Nirvana (Come as You Are, In Bloom, Lithium and Sliver). The band released a couple of EP’s and two full-length records (including Swandive that was released a mere 14 days before Nevermind) before calling it quits in 1992.
I remember seeing Bullet LaVolta at the WBCN Rock and Roll Rumble in 1988. The Rumble roster that year included The Lemonheads, Tribe, Bim-Skala-Bim, Dogzilla (Lunch with Ed!) and Heretix. Heretix beat out Bullet LaVolta only to fufill “The Rumble Curse” by breaking up.
