For a man who professes to live on watermelon and beer, Matthew Houck, or Phosphorescence, is doing pretty well. Last night at Nectar Lounge in Fremont, Houck and his current touring band masterfully worked their way through an emotional and at times exuberant, set of music. Phosphorescence guitarist Jesse Anderson Ainslie frenetic solos were an unexpected highlight. Second only to Ainslie’s uncanny resemblance to Tommy Chong.

The nearly 80 minute whiskey ‘n’ tears soaked set ended with Houck serenading the crowd goodnight in exactly the way a man who just put out a record full of Willie Nelson songs would. With a cover of Nelson’s, The Party’s Over.
You can catch Phosphorescence at Holocene in Portland tonight. And I mean that in the nicest possible “do not miss this show” kind of way. For more Phosphorescence tour dates, click here.
