So I’m hoping that you have at least read “Please Kill Me“. That way, you might have a sense of how important Hilly Kristal’s role was in the birth of American punk rock. If you did read it then you have a sense of what CBGB’s was like back in the day (it closed last year and at last check was set to open in Las Vegas with the original CB’s Shitters intact…).

Hilly Kristal left us yesterday at the age of 75. Hilly Kristal knew what we all wanted before we did. He also gave bands like The Velvet Underground and The Stooges a glittery, blood-splattered backgroud to work their magic on. And then there were these guys who decided it would be easier if they all changed their last names to “Ramone”. Hilly gave them a place where they could be who they were. And they were everything…
